I am considering heat forming some clear lexan over the stock lens to make a clear piece, then cut out the stock lens and glue in the new one. I would use LED's in some nice looking pattern and then smoke the whole thing with VHT Nite-Shades. I think it would be badass.
I don't like the clear on it, but that other silver one looks cool.

I'll share with you all my links on clear taillights, tinting and LED's.

You'll also need to switch to electronic flashers if you use LED lights. I have more info on LED replacement bulbs, but I think you said you wanted to make your own, right?
Also, if you plan to tint the whole thing you don't necessarily need to have clear lenses. The LT1 firebird used solid red lenses. You can take those apart and arrange a custom array of red LED's and then seal them back up. Then tint it a little to make it look nice.
Don't forget that for them to be legal you need some red reflectors in the rear.

that looks aweful
You could probably make it if you fabbed new clear covers like I mentioned above and then painted the honeycomb design on the outside or the inside. You would still need some good red lights to fill it up though.
thank's alot.
