Default Pissed off (rant)

So today I decide to start preparing my F.A.S.T. 90mm Intake for painting. I sanded first with 150, then 320, then 400 as directed by the local PPG dealer. I then applied 3 thin coats of primer (black). I sanded that with 400 and then 500 grit. Then I applied two coats of adhesion spray. Then I applied my aerosol can of the paint I picked out. It just looks black. It was supposed to be the same color as LawmanSS's intake, but it's just black. I am very disappointed in the paint. I will try and post pics later. I have put two coats on and will apply a third in the morning. If it doesn't turn out different, I will take it off and take it to someone to be sprayed out of a paintgun. Sucks to try and do things yourself to save a little bit of money and time.

I know what you mean. When I try to do things myself (VHT or painting something) they generally don't turn out right.

I need to watch more Bob Ross.

Brian,

Did they charge you a premium price for the Black Sapphire paint?...perhaps they forgot to add the pearl/flake (or whatever goes into it)...or just intentionally gave you regular black. FWIW, my intake just looks like standard gloss black in the bay...not enough light gets in there to really bring out the pearls...

I saw the can before they put it in the aerosol...it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Maybe I didn't sand with coarse enough grit. I saw you started with 80 grit. I'm gonna see what it looks like in the light tomorrow and then maybe start over.

It shouldn't matter what grits you use, so long as the final product is perfectly smooth...I used the 80 to speed up removal of the texture. Is the aerosol mixed as a single stage paint or do you have to clear over it? Perhaps painting this color in two stages brings out the pearl/flake?

One of two things can be happening here. Either you arent shaking the paint up well enough to allow the pearl to be mixed in with the black pigment or the aerosal can for some reason cant get the pearl or metallic flakes to fit through the hole of the can. I doubt this is the case so I would assume its not mixed up well enough.

So you think it's just spraying out the black and the pearl/metallic is not getting used?

yeah if you said it looked beautiful before it went into the can and it isnt turning out like you think it should then it sounds like all the pearl and metallic (if it is a metallic paint) is resting at the bottom of the can while you are spraying.
