Car Cover: Really Necessary?
When my car is parked in the garage over the winter, do I really need a cover? All it will do is prevent it from collecting dust, so why can't we just save the $200 or whatever you would invest in a GOOD cover, and just wash it in the spring when you do your first full detail?
If anyone can give me a better reason other than dust I may consider one. Any help?

Car cover and garage here. I really can't think of a good reason for you to purchase one other than preventing dust though. I had my car cover before I had a garage, I don't even always cover it in the garage anymore though, just occasionally.

I've got a cover that's hardly been used. I always end up with blankets since I work on the car during winter storage. I use an old shower curtain over the ragtop to keep it from collecting dust.

if its in a 2 or 3 car garage i would cover it if its in there for the entire 6 months of winter cause you know,if you have kids, or the wife or GF is gunna hit it with the door of her car eventually or sumone might need sumthing and lean up against it and scratch it , if you have cats, or the neighbors have cats, you know they are attracted to jumping on cars, even if they can find a way in your garage, they are very very sneeky. oh and you can put tiny scratches in your pait if some one happens to write "Wash ME!" in the dust on your car... that would **** me off.

I keep my car in the garage, and I spent about $30 on a cover that I rarely use. But, if I want to leave the car sitting for a while I'll cover it to prevent dust from settling.

My experience with covers that are used outside is that they usually cause more damage than they prevent, even with the expensive covers. The wind blows them and they rub the paint, and ice can build up on them and make them a bitch to get off without hurting the paint. I say use them to keep your car clean for short periods outside and for keeping the dust off inside for long periods. I have never had any luck with them outside over the winter months here in PA.
