Default M6 shift boot on A4 car

i have seen it before on here but now i cant find it...... someone on here had taken the top plate for the console out of a M6 car and said that they modified it to work with the auto shifter, now you lose the gear indicator but it would look damn good with a shift boot around the shifter. if anyone knows what you would have to do to make this work i would greatly appreciate it pics would be nice too

Here's the write-up I did on both A4 Shifter Mod and Shift Boot:

A4 Shifter Mod/Shift Boot

Didn't use the M6 boot though - found that the one from a Grand Am worked MUCH Better!

I think what he's talking about is swapping the entire top half of the plastic console from an m6 car. If I remember right, doing so eliminates the ability to shift the car into 1st and 2nd gear manually because the shifter hits the back of the console. Dunno if that's a big deal to you or not. I can't get anything to pull up on search at the moment.

Well, I don't think the boot will go over the stock **** tail as it is much bigger than the tail on the aftermarket **** - but it is slightly elastic so it might. I can't check for certain as I no longer have the stock ****.

As far as the boot height goes with the stock **** - it probably would come right up to the bottom of the stock tail, but I can't be certain.

Guess I have alot of 'if's' in those last answers!

No problem! I don't know if you can still find the **** I purchased as it is from MBA and they're out of business. There was a sponsor here carrying the remainder of their stock - so they might still have some available.

I purchased the **** & A4 Adapter that I used from a member here in the For Sale Section.

The combo of the **** I used and the boot was perfect - the boot install was VERY easy with no modifications other than removing the stock plastic sliders.

The pics don't do the setup justice - it looks much better in person

I've got the M6 upper console on my A4 car. Again, like stated above, 1st and 2nd gear cannot be selected. Additionally, the ashtray (behind the shifter on the M6 console) cannot be opened while in drive, and if the ashtray is open, drive cannot be selected.

It looks MUCH better than the A4 stock console. Basically looks just like an M6 car with a A4 shift handle. I've stood from a distance and watched people argue over whether or not the car was an auto or manual.

Only pic I have that shows the shifter, and its pretty shitty:

I englarged the pic to show the shifter better and its too big for the board, so you have to click (BIG pic!):

M6 console with A4 shifter

Stock shifter BTW.

Default Great info - exactly what I needed

This thread was exactly what I've been looking for. I'm new to the 4th gen world and I figured this was do-able. I had a friend a lonnng time ago that did this in his fox body stang with an AOD. The 5 spd console looked so much better.

Just at a glance, I figured I'd lose the use of 1st and possibly 2nd gear selection and it sounds like that's the case. Now here's the newbie question (flamesuit on) are the lower consoles the same and the only difference is the uppers?

If that's the case, does anyone have a black 98-02 M6 upper they'd like to part with ?

(I'll post a WTB in the parts forum too).

Also, I saw somewhere there was an adapter to fit a M6 shift **** to an A4 shifter, but I can't remember where I saw that and I can't find the adapter after searching a handful of online vendors. Any info on this part would be great.

Thanks in advance-

You don't lose ANY gear selection with any of the Shift ****/Boot mods I've seen (including mine that was referenced earlier with link)...

Sent you a PM with link to adapter site

Hey all... I own a thirdgen that used to be an automatic. Back before I even thought of donig an LS1/6spd swap, I put in a 4th gen manual console. Since the cars are so similar, this will most likely apply to you 4th gen guys too.

In order to have free range of the gear selection, I had to modify things a bit. The shifter is bolted to the floor with 4 bolts. I simply elongated them in the direction that I need it to go. In my case, it was towards the driver and foward. So I made them longer, slid the shifter, bolted it back down, and that was is. I Never had a problem getting to the ashtray either...because thats where my window switches are.

Any of these ideas are good ones though!!

He's referring to using the M6 console in place of the A4 console.
Read the threads in my first post.

MBA Products made them years ago, but they have since gone out of business and all stock has dried up. Thunder Racing still sells some remainder MBA stuff, so try there.
