What to clean exterior of engine with??
It's sat almost all winter, and I just wanna give the engine a good bath. Is that so bad? Or is it just not a good idea all together? I was thinking some simple green, or just plain water, to remove the loose stuff from last fall. Thanks for any advice.

I use Gunk Engine Brite for the block....let it soak for several minutes and gently spray it off. I use an old spray bottle filled with water so I can control the spray. I use an off-the-shelf cleaner/detailer for all the plastic parts. The key is patience and don't expect to do it all in one day. Even if you could do it all in one day I wouldn't suggest it cause your back and the backs of your legs will let you know the next day.
I drive my car year-round, and I have no problem at all getting all the lovely Indiana road salt and winter grime cleaned away....good luck!

When you guys use Simple Green under the hood, are there certain areas that you avoid all together, or certain areas that you are more gentle with?

I use Griots Engine cleaner & Engine gloss.
Spray on, wait 5 minutes, hose off, wait for it to dry, apply gloss.
Easy and works good.

It's the "hose off" part I'm worried about. Seems like there should be spots to avoid. Even though everything uses waterproof connectors.

Re: What to clean exterior of engine with??
I bought simple green yesterday. I want to clean my engine bay today. I still need to know whether I can hit basically the entire bay, or whether to avoid certain areas. I have never cleaned the bay before, since the car hasn't been driven much and isn't very dirty, just a little dust, but want to start "blinging" the bay. Best to start with a clean slate.

I've been using Simple green and a hose from the very first. No problems with hosing on my LS1. I know the LT1's don't like water of any kind. I even use my pressure washer with no trouble. Stay away from the rattle can "engine detailers" as thy attract and hold dirt. The dealer did it to mine and it took weeks of cleaning to get it off.

Re: What to clean exterior of engine with??
We use a degreaser thats not harmfull to any of the components of the engine. Either use the soft brissel brush, or a spray bottle to apply, then spray it off w/ the hose, then we use an air hose to make sure everythings dry. Ive done it to my moms suburban, my dads vette (L98) and my TBI Silverado, and none of them have had a problem. Ive seen it used on just about everything, and there hasnt been a problem.
Ive seen people use simple green the same way, and they've said they've yet to have any kinds of problems either
