4th gen? What year?

I'd be interested in the CF. Been wanting to paint the T-tops anyways. And what better place to shed weight than at the highest point in the car?

 

again, fiberglass is much more feasible. weight difference between a c/f ttop and fiberglass would be minimal. If I had a choice I'd much rather pay for fiberglass over c/f, but I'm not loaded so..

also, no one would want to paint the c/f becuase otherwise you all would have settled with fiberglass already. Ever think about a top view of the car? would look much better with fiberglass IMHO, YMMV

 

I think it was 1990 when they had the plastic ones... I guess it didnt work because it only lasted one year

I'd be mostly interested in CF for the strength and rigidity over fiberglass. And CF could be left natural, or painted. IMO it'd look better painted, but whatever floats your boat.

Where you at on this VFN?

 

It was the 3rd gens that had lexan T-tops and it was only for a year and a half from mid 1991 until the 3rd gen was replaced by the 4th gen. They are notorious for warping after a few years under the sun.

 

I keep on debating trying to do it with fiberglass, anyone know what a ttop weighs?

 

I just have a couple things to add to this. After reading through the first few posts that were full of bull **** I had to skip to the posting part as to not wast too much time. But here is what I have to add to this thread. In my 98 ss I had a mechanic leave the t-tops unlatched after he was finished with my car. the result of this mistake was a t-top ejecting from my car at around 70mph. Now here is were I am adding to the info for you. the t-top did numerous flips in the air and landed on the highway. It did not break. It only broke after a car ran it over as I was trying to retrieve the damn thing (looked so god damn intentional too) any way the heavy part was the metal side with the latching mechanism. So even if you replaced the glass I don't think it would be worth too much. Also keep in mind that t-tops can be gouged without breaking leading me to believe that they are not just a tempered glass but IDK. If they weren't, couldn't you just pain the glass (or whatever material it is) itself?

Damn I feel dumb. I didn't think our T-tops were glass. I thought they were already made of some kind of plexy glass. I say this because the previous owner of my car did not latch the passanger T-top in one time. It came flying out and landed on the gravel at 60 some MPH. It has small scrach the on it but you have to look for it to find it. My brother came home bitching about it, the car was only a month old.

 

^^^ i hate hearing all this t ttop stuff thank god ill be having the carbon fiber targa in about a month or so.

 

i dont think there a good idea because you will lose the feeling off openness tht it gives compared to a hard top, im assuming that they will be extra expensive too
