Running a 160 stat and a 2-3 quart extra pan, will I be able to handle a 3K stall/ what temps will I be running?

Deeper pans help from a thermal mass perspective. Obviously the cooler is more benefitial if it get adquate airflow. For vehicles that perform hard launches. drag racing and or road course racing the deep pan will help minimize loss of prime to the pump.

I would agree on the hard lauch part, And while yes it does take longer to heat up a larger volume of fluid it also takes longer to cool it so no gain no loss .

I feel more oil is always a good idea as long as ground clearance is not an issue. In some cases a factory truck pan works just fine and is very affordable. If you want a deeper pan the TCI pans are what I like to use. With a high stall converter a cooler is always a must. The cooler the better. Vince

It seems like your asking wether you will need a cooler or not. YES YOU NEED A TRANSMISSION COOLER WITH A STALL! Don't skimp either unless you don't like your transmission much.

I don't get how a pan wouldn't help? When I put my deep/finned Derale pan on, my trans temps dropped 20 degrees.

I had a derale on my first fbody but didnt have a temp guage. thanks for all the input. I really dont like my trans much anyways. I might just swap it out for a built one when I decide on my TC.

I have a yank SS4000 and a Trick Flow Deep Pan, and a cooler...driving around town all day long having fun on a hot day hime has never gotten over 180.
We put in coolers on anything over 3000...heat+transmission=poor performance

If you install a good gauge in the pan of your transmission I bet you will be amazed at how fast the oil temperature can go up. I had a 700R4 with a 3800 stall behind a 468 bbc, Against the converter it would jump 150 degrees in just a few seconds. The way I see it, if your car isn't moving, all of the energy (maybe 300+ hp) is going into heating up less than 3 gallons of oil, once the oil is hot, it is going to take more than just a big pan to dissipate the heat, you need a good heat exchanger, something much better than the factory installed.
