I was told it came out of a station wagon but he wasnt 100%
Just about any th400 would be a good choice to build. The obvious thing to look at is that the unit has a good case with good internals. In most cases you will want to make sure that you have a sprag style direct drum when building the unit and also an output shaft that uses a slip yoke. Other than that they are all pretty much a good candidate. Vince

I dont know about the sprag. got any pics to tell the difference.
I have two 400s and both look good.
I have never seen a 400 with a 3 pinion gear planet. I will have to look through my photo's to see if I have a picture of a sprag style drum vs the spring and roller style.
There has not been a three pinion gearset in a 400. Below is a nice overview of the difference from another LS1 Tech user.
