The only time a converter goes bad is when a bearing fails or you loose a transmission and it puts contamination into the converter.

Yeah, I am pretty sure that if its been slipping in its life it can burn up the lockup clutch in the converter and then it techniclly would need at least a new lockup clutch. I would do what you said and send it in just to make sure, would be better to pay $300 for that than $2000 for another new tranny.

Well I asked Dave (from Yank) should I send in my converter for a refresh and he said no. That at my power level and mileage on it that unless something goes in the tranny it should last 5-7 years. Once again this is not me-this is someone from Yank.
Chameleon TA had over 100k miles on his with hundreds of passes and he said his was fine.

Stupid question here probably, but can a 4L60E Yank SS3800 be updated to a 4L80E trans? If I ever go turbo, i'll be upgrading to atleast a 4L80E
Yes it is a SS3800, Yank used to make it with that stall

the input, and pump is different. and someone posted not to long ago about some other differences.
if the tranny was good from the guy you bought it from, you should be ok.
but who is to say the guy didnt blow his tranny and thats why he sold the converter?
if you trust the seller, then bolt it up and go, IMO.
