Default Help me pick a converter stall speed

A friend and I are puuting together a LS1 swap in a 87 Monte SS and I'm trying to pick the converter stall speed.

It's a LS1 with a mild cam with duration in the low to mid 220s, LSA will be 114 or 115. The car weighs 3400 lbs and has 3.73 gears. It will be a daily driver. We're not looking for something too crazy, I was thinking 25-2800 stall, but I'm not sure.

I'd go minimum of 3200, probably 3500 or so. A 4L60 lock up converter with 3.73's will be very drivable with a 3500 stall. Circle D, Yank, Vig, FTI, any of these shops are more than capable of specing and building a converter for you.

A good budget option for you is the 11" 3000-3200 stall. They are $375 with free shipping. Barley know the converter is there and a nice flash when you are playing around.

Another option with better performance is our billet street/strip series. They are $695 right now and would make the car very fun to drive. I would suggest a 3200 stall.

I would say no lower than 3000 keep in mind most people wish they woulda gone higher. I'd recommend 3400-3600

Some will recommend higher stalls then a 3500, but they have performance in mind (like drag racing or roll racing). But for a purely street driven car, the 3000 stall with a 2.0-2.2 will be your best bet. Both Circle-D and Yank can fill that bill easily and affordably.

3200-3600 for a dedicated driver, 3600+ for performance.

Thanx. Just courious what the performance difference would be between the $375 and $700 converter. I'm sure it's more expensive for a reason. We will definately spend the money if will make a difference.

Reliability, strength, & performance. A converter is not a place you want to go for the cheapest one you can get. It will have a big impact on the cars performance, driveablility, and will toast a trans if it lets go.

The $375 option uses the stock front cover and clutch. It is a 12" version so it will take some abuse. The $700 9.75" version uses a billet front and piston. So basically more parts to buy and machine. It is definitely stronger and will make a big difference in performance.

Which would you recomend. Power will be at or under 400RWHP and mainly street driven, probably not a DD. If performance will be noticably better I'm prone to spend the extra money, but if strength is the only thing going for it, I'll go cheap.

i am running a vigilante 3200 stall and it works very, very well for a daily driver car. i hear they are under rated. but after driving it awhile i think i should have stepped up to atleast a 3600 maybe. i just wanted a stall that felt and drove like stock.

Re'
The small more expensive converter will definitely perform better. It is about 20LBS lighter so the motor has better throttle response, less rotating mass. It also will have better flash and shift extensions, putting the motor in the power band better. It is worth it, it will make the car much more fun to drive.

my first after market converter was a yank ss3600 and i would recommend that for even a DD. It definatly woke the car up and wasn't bad at all in traffic.
