Default What is lock up exactly?

Excuse me for being abit thick but how do I tell if my 4L60E is actually locking up.When I drive in D at whatever speed I am doing when I brake it always feels like I'm free wheeling? Is this normal or should I feel engine braking?

Thanks.

best i can say is it feels like a small gear shift once you are already in 4th. rpms drop 2-300 i believe. what rear end gear do you have?

In the OD posiion you should feel little or no engine braking as the inout sprag allow a free wheel .
Lockup is and actual clutch in the converter, has nothing to do with engine braking since lockup is turned off at 0 throttle. but what lockup does is when cruising the lockup clutch is applied and effectively bypasses the converter to create a direct coupling between the transmission and the engine as opposed to a fluid coupling when not locked and eliminate loss from the fluid coupling for better fuel efficiency

you can tell if its locking up by pressing the brakes and watching the rpm's. whenever the brakes are applied the TC will unlock. You should be able to see the rpm's change when you brake. you don't need to push the brakes hard it just needs to be enough to turn the brake lights on. cruise at like 50 in overdrive the TC should be locked up then press the brake lightly with your left foot while keeping your right on the gas and you should see your rpms go up as soon as the brake lights turn on. then when you let off the brakes it should lock up again pretty much immiedatly.

Its almost unnoticeable with a stock converter imo. It's easy to tell with an aftermarket one with a higher stall.

^^Yea, you have to know what to feel for with a stock Convertor.

There is a Solenoid in the Transmission that re-directs fluid and it engages that lockup function. It can be tuned to go into effect in any gear, I had mine for 3rd and 4th with it was the Auto setup.

Thanks for the good explanations all.I was looking for what I thought was supposed to be engine braking something I think then is lacking on an auto.Wouldn't it be good if in the intermediate gears and you are slowing up for a bend you had some engine braking just like a manual?

Not with the Auto cause it will put undue stress on components that aren't designed for it.

In manual D-2-1 you do have engine braking

My trans when coasting In overdrive I have some engine braking is that just because of the speed your turning the converter? For example in overdrive coasting down hill 50-55mph the motor will be turning 1000-1200rpm.
