Default Little E40D help.

This is for my grandfathers old f350 2wd diesel truck.

The original trans went kaboom for this and was replaced with a new one from ford probably 2000 miles ago. My dad did all the work replacing it etc put a new stock cooler on it new lines etc. Also came with new converter.

Here is the issue (keep in mind this is second hand) at random it seems the trans will barf foamy fluid out of the dipstick tube. And i dont mean a little i mean alot. This has happened twice now that I know of and was only after about 1000 miles functions fine the rest of the time. The first time was cruising down the road about 55mph and had been for about 15 minutes when suddenly it just did this (no note of trans temp etc by my very old grandfather ). The second time the truck was sitting in his driveway idling warming up for about maybe 10 minutes sitting on a slight uphill incline, suddenly pukes a couple quarts. He assures me that it was not overheated etc.

My first thought is that its been overfilled in both cases. The fluid still looks fine and it pulls fine when fluid is topped off. My dad seems to think its temp related but sitting in the driveway idling seems to me like for it to get too hot something would have to be dragging good transbrake style.

I will defer to the experts for ideas here since I have no idea about e40d's. You dont have to dumb things down for me too badly, I have built 60e's 350's 400's and 700r's and glides just no experience with the ford junk.

Thanks for the advice. What about the vent being blocked/damaged would cause the frothing though. I always like to know the why part of the fixes too.

Yes if the air cannot escape as the trans warms then it will push fluid out the dipstick and make a mess
Trans fluid has a high expansion rate as it warms

If the vent is good, the pump may be warped. I've done many plow trucks and have seen this problem when the units were way overheated. Ford contracts a company to do their rebuilds. A warped pump may have been overlooked. Take it to Ford ASAP to get a report started on this issue. The unit he bought is a "Reman" unit. It is not new or perfect. If the problem pursists, he can get another one. He will probably have to R&R it himself, tho. Good Luck.

Thanks for the help fellas if you have any other ideas keep them coming. It has been quite awhile since this work was done so idk about ford going jack crap. He doesnt drive it much and it has sat around since it had the problem. I have only recently been informed of the problem since for whatever reason they decided to go this route instead of just letting me rebuild it.

Well boy do I feel dumb . They had misinformed me, the fluid comes from around the converter, but only if creeping along not at highway speeds. any ideas with this new information?

These were famous for popping the front seal. Ford has an updated seal, I red Loctite all the way around the corner of the lip of the seal and never had a problem. The bushing could have spun out, depending on the year, and run into the seal. The trans has to come out. How long did it take after you installed it to leak? See if you nicked the seal or gouged the bushing. These are a few of the problems I've seen over the years. Good Luck.
