Default 8" race converter and street driving

anyone have any experience with an 8 or 9 inch converter and driving on the street? th350 with 24k cooler and deep pan...any problems? i *really want a good converter, but the smallest i've personally driven on the street is 10" and it was only 4000 stall. a 5-5200 8" converter would be ideal, but the car will see the street as much as it sees the track and i'm concerned it would get too hot.

anyone?

I have quite a few guys running a combo like that. With no overheating problems. I make my converters with a special stator, making them very efficient and do not require a lot of pedal to get the car moving. They make a great performance converter and an OK street converter. We can make a custom one for your setup. Please shoot me a PM or give me a call and we can discuss the options and prices.

It is obvious that you are looking for a true race oriented converter. This is what we do. We run 8" converters on the street all the time. As far as a special stator all of ours are tailored to your combination in wich I would need to know more about.Weight ,gear, tire, powerplant, etc. Give me a call or go to our website and fill out an build sheet with all of your info and we can make a recomendation.1-866-726-8358 The build sheet is downloadable.Check this link out!!!

I have two experiences. I first had a Fuddle 4800 8" in my old 2000 Z/28. It drove great on the street. It did not feel crazy loose. It only went 1.48 on motor, but it went 1.38 on 150 shot. I went 10.92 NA and 10.00 on 150 shot.

I switched to an ATI 5500. It very extremely loose on the street, and I honestly I don't consider this converter streetable. New owner has gone 10.8 and 9.9 respectively, should go even faster.

Hope that helps.

Call FTI, both of my cars have big stalls in them 5000+ and both make a 200mile round trip to the strip all the time, My 440ci LSX has a 5500 nitrous converter and on the 100 mile one way trip i havent seen anything above 170 temps. this is a street car that see's DD use and runs mid 5's in the 1/8 mile and foot braked a 1.2960ft

thank you all for the information. streetability is of no concern, i am more concerned with heat problems when cruising. car will fall somewhere between 2800-3000lb. thanks again for the responses.

i have a 8" yank race converter. flashes 5000 on a head and cam 6.0. guessing 52-5400 behind my 408. ive street drove it for 4 years on the weekends, no issues.
big cooler and fan. drives great on the street for what it is. almost feels like a lock up converter when you shift into high gear. very effecient.

as mentioned above, ATI wont build a race converter to drive on the street. ive had a few guys i know be turned down by them. as john said above, they are pretty loose, but great race pieces.

My old setup used a 9" stall from Transmission Specialties... it had a sprag in it and was rated at 5200. It flashed abotu 4800-5000 behind my 402 and an 10.90's NA with a 1.52 60'. It drove great on the streets and never got hot. That was also with a 3.50 gear and 28" slicks.

My new setup is a 8" spragless from Transmission Specialites... looking for better performance out of this one and about the same driveability. Its rated at about 5600 for my setup.

The only problem you might have is if you're in constant stop and go traffic on a 100* day.

mine runs a few degrees cooler in stop and go. it could be the rpm.
i buzz at about 4000 on the highway.
good fans on the motor, and tranny cooler and everything should be fine.

That ATI 5500 was so loose, that when I shifted gears on the street it sounded like I was always in one gear... Know what I mean? The engine never lugged down a bit on the shifts. The 4800 drove way better. My old 4L60E Yank TP4500 stuff also drove great on the street and even the highway.

I had ATI speck out a 9" converter for me, and it also was WAY too loose on the street. It was supposed to be a 3800 but seemed more like a 5000. I then had Marty at Neal Chance Racing speck me out a 9" converter. I told him I would like something around a 3800-4000. It ended up being more like a 5500-5800 and extremely loose.
After having it for a year, I sent it back and had it upgraded to use his new billet stator which he informed me will be much tighter. It has yet to be installed, so I am skeptical on how it will work out. I am thinking maybe I should of went with a 9.5" since the car seems some street use.
As far as you being concerned about the temp on the street, you can always just add one of those trans coolers that have a fan on them. I currently use one, and even with my very loose converters the trans temp never gets over 185 degrees even in 90+ degree weather.
