Default How long does a 4L60E last?

I'm considering buying an 02 A4 Z28 with almost 60K on the clock. The car appears to be stock.

My plans are some simple stuff, lid, bellows, Long tube headers, wtih cats and a cat back exhaust, converter (2800 or 3000), and maybe a 224 cam.

How long do these transmissions typically last?

Depends on heat, power, WOT shift rpms, launch & driving styles, weight of car, and maintenance. How long it lasts can really vary....

I understand what you're saying. I'm not looking for a specific number.

Maybe I asked the question wrong. When did your 4L60E fail, how many miles were on it? And what did you do to the car to help it fail (N20, high stall launch on slick, etc)?

Mine failed due to a guy off LS1.com selling me a faulty converter, this happened at 23k miles on a 02 model !

ouch... that had to hurt. Based on your sig it sounds like you've fixed the trans. How's it been holding up to all the power you're making?

Mine failed at 16K miles. For the 1st 12K basically nothing had been done to the car. Then I put in everything on the sig. and it went quickly.

My first one died at 65,000 miles. The car was COMPLETELY stock. Now I have another stock GM replacement 4L60E with a 4400 stall, 150 shot w/ all the bolt-ons. It dynos ~470 rwhp and ~600 rwtq. I spray off the line and through the all the shifts, including overdrive. I've put around 20,000 on this one and it's still going strong. Go figure!

Mine just went out and it makes me mad because i dont have any serious mods. I have a Lid, Cutout, HPPIII. I also only have 33,000 miles on it. So yeah i would recommend to anyone with a 4L60E to buy a tranny cooler as soon as possible no matter what mods you have.

blaSSt... How do you like the Vigilante 3200 converter? That's the converter I would consider buying.

When I do it over again I will go higher stall. With the shift kit and the built Tranny it's hitting pretty hard, but I can't get my 60 ft. below 1.7. I think I could do better and still be streetable with a higher stall. Probably a 3600-3800 Yank, TCI or Precision.

Get a tranny cooler, a deep pan, and a shift kit and it should last a very long time. The reason most fail is heat. All of the above lower the trans temp.

Dyno was 363 RWHP/356 RWTQ. Running 12.5x @109 (He says wanting more)

From a drivetrain standpoint yeah it's streetable. The only marginal point the 1-2 upshift hits pretty hard.

I've got it too low now and the scrapes are bugging me. But I've got a plan for that.
