Angry Turbo 350 broke the 2nd gear sprag AGAIN!

Well at the Thunder Shootout in the semi-finals the 2nd gear sprag broke again for the second straight weekend.

Now this turbo 350 has cost me up to $3,000.00 in prize money the last 2 weekends.

Has anyone use a power glide? I think this is the next step.

How can a stock motor blow up a brand new turbo 350? Twice in 2 weekend weekends. Hell, what is going to happen when we put the new motor in that makes 120 more HP!

I'm very curious what's goin wrong?

TH350 is MY next step. I don't want to have to go through all the 4L60E drama once again with the TH350 like you.

That sucks man. Sorry to hear it.

It's just not your year coach. I'm shocked that you keep breaking the TH350 though. These things should take alot more then that.

Thanks guys.

Iam just not a very happy camper right now. We are trying to go to Ennis this weekend to run the super 10's but if we cant keep the Hot Rod fom braking, no need on going.

My wife took the Hot Rod back to the tranny shop today. I will call tonight and find out what is going on.

TH350's are tough peices. If you're blowing them up all the time, it may be time to find a new builder. What kind of power are you putting into it, and what upgrades are in the trans?

The motor in the Hot Rod right now is a stock motor with a B-1 cam and 50,000 miles on it. About the builder, he is a old school drag racer that builds alot of trannys around the Houston area. I have the car back at his shop and will find out about it tomorrow.

Thanks guys

I had the same problem with my 78 Blazer but it had a 396, 7 inch lift, and 35 inch tall tires. I broke 3 intermediate sprags, 2 within a week. TCI makes a modified drum that uses a TH-400 sprag instead of the weaker TH-350 one. It's part number is 327900 and Jeg's list them for $300. I put one in my Blazer 6 years ago and never broke another one.

You might call Gilbert at Trans King in Gaslveston. He's has built a bunch of th350's for locals here in Houston including me. They are holding up well . Mine did fine even with a h/c/gas setup with the normal 2nd gear sprag.

That is true about the about the 400 style sprag drum, you will keep breaking a stock 350 sprag if you have any kind of decent h/p. Have your builder put the 400 style drum in your trans and your problem will be fixed for good.

So you guys think that a modified drum that uses a TH-400 sprag instead of the weaker TH-350 one will fix the problem?

My tranny was built with all stock parts. My tranny guy said that this was the way to go. I guess I proved him wrong.

So if I put in a TH-400 Sprag my problems will be fixed?

Coach,
I heard you were at the shootout over the weekend, but I never tracked you down. I hate to hear about your problems. The TH350 intermediate sprag is the weakest part of the whole transmission. If you calm the 2nd gear shift down, it may allow your stock sprag to live a little longer, but the best bet is our 327900 sprag/drum assembly. You won't have to worry about sprag breakage anymore.

Kevin,

Sorry I missed ya at the Shootout. I was the one with the Pewter 02 Z/28 with stickers all over it. I was only in the bracket racing. Anyway.

Thanks for the heads up on the sprag. Mr. James Langford is the one that builds the trannys for us. He get all his parts for yall at TCI. I am meeting with him tonight to talk about what to do. I will tell him what you said about the sprag.

Do ya think that the rest of the parts will hold up?

Back in the day of my high HP race cars, I only used TCI stuff. They pay good money at the big races.

The rest of the parts will hold up just fine. Other than the sprag, the TH350 is a strong transmission.
