The 4x4 output shaft you have is much shorter than the one needed for your slip yoke application, also you will need to get the correct tailshaft housing.

so i need to order which output shaft, im confused and the aftermarket ones are over priced. I picked up a 2WD tail on ebay but after reading, GM makes various differant parts for the 4L80e and i just want to order the correct ones, way over budget.

there is a speed ring for the rear sensor on a 2wd thats not on most 4wd's, unless its a rebuild from a 2wd-also there is a plug in the rear of the 4wd trans that needs one from a 2wd (small hole in it for oiling)
so sensor ring, diff output shaft, rear housing, plug is at least needed, unless someone has something else to add-there are some people on ebay that sell used parts, prob find the shaft and output carrier w/ring

The 4L80e was used in a lot of vehicles, many of them are just getting to the end of normal life, so the market for used parts will soon be flooded. In the last year I have noticed the prices for complete units and parts is going down really fast. I thought I got a great deal when I paid 400 for a complete trans with converter a year ago, but now they are selling for under $300 on craigslist
My 4000# car has all stock hard parts with alto friction, it seems to be doing fine at 590 rwtq, so you may not need aftermarket parts.

Circle D in Houston also has a transmission shop attached, I bet they can provide you with a box of used parts to convert from 4x4 to 2wd slip yoke.

No.
Different shaft.

The best output shaft for you would be the one that is fully splined.

You can also take the more common type and machine it. I machine them when building them for a car application so they get more spline engagement with the yoke.

You should be able to find a used one, there are several variations but any can be made to work, some easier than others.

Make sure you use an output for a '97-up transmission.
