Default rebuild? new? built? Grrr, please help

Money is tight a few months after buying my 1st house. My stock tranny handled what I threw at it over the past year pretty well...but now its time to pull it.

Do I,

rebuild it locally for about $600?
Buy a GM reman for $1300?
Buy a speed inc level 1 for 13xx?
buy another vendors tranny for 13xx-19xx?

Stock tranny handled 350rwhp for a year before the wot 2-3 shift started taking 4 years...

I wouldn't bother with a cheap rebuild - it will need it again in no time.

I was going to go with the sponsor over there -> (Racing Transmissions), but mine went before I was ready (don't they always) and I had to get it done right away (drive this car every day).

I found a local guy who could do a performance rebuild (he had done about 4 others in the local F-body group). It was $1400 with all the good stuff.

Since winter is here, maybe you could hold off a couple of months and save a little more to get it done right. Do you have to drive it every day?

Also, I've seen Lucas trans addative get quite a few more miles out of one if it is only slipping. I needed to get a few more weeks of racing in once and used it to keep my 2-3 shift from slipping so bad. It really works If you don't have any hard parts broken. Might be worth a try to buy you some time.

Find out the exact part that Speed Inc tranny is being upgraded with. Get that done locally by some place you trust. I think you will come out cheaper with the same tranny.

I think your best bet would be a Stage 4 FLP trans.
Expensive though at $2200.

I would buy one of the rebuild kits online, and have someone locally do it, if money is tight. If its not your daily driver I'd sit it for a while and save the money and do it right. Not like you want to race in the snow anyway

I agree with Octane Check out the FLP Level 4, cant beat it but it is a little pricey. Save your money and get it done right the first time so you want have problem occurences down the road.
Good Luck

Agreed, FLP is great. They came highly recommend to me when I needed a new trans and I've been very happy with it. I'm making just a little more power than you (about 360rwhp at the moment) and FLP seems to think that their Level IV will last about as long behind my setup as the rest of the car will.

If this were true, a stock trans even on a stock car would only be good for 3yr/36K...

LOL didn't realized you live in Arizona, when my tranny goes I'll be going with the FLP level 4, but if the money is not there you may want to talk to 00 Firehawk, he's selling his built tranny and would probably make you a hell of a deal.

Todd: We have a built 4L60E unit you may be interested in.

4L60 Street/Strip transmission is by far the most popular rebuild option if your performance goals are less then or on the edge of 400hp. The unit is designed and built for those who are weekend racers, but also prefer good street manners all for a economical price. If you don't have a core to provide us, a core charge is applicable. We will charge you up front for the core charge and refund your money when the core is received. You are responsible for shipping the core to us.

SPECS: Complete disassembly and inspection of all hard parts. All new clutches, bushings, paper and rubber seals. Includes:

Transgo shift kit
13-vane blueprinted pump assembly
Raybestos Pro-Series band or Alto wide-band
hi-performance clutches
Gapless pump/drum seals
Corvette servo
late h/d sunshell.
-- Rated to 400hp
Transmissions come with a 1 year/12,000 mile limited warranty (Defective parts & labor, not due to abuse if horsepower is higher than 400hp) if transmission is run in spec to rated horsepower.

Let me know if you have any questions. We also offer a better built unit that will handle 550rwhp (rated)... but this tranny just went 9.3x, so it will handle more than rated.

Shoot me a PM or call me direct at 516-779-2330 if you have any questions.
