Default car drives forward when i park :-(

Ok so after averting a disaster i have to find out why my car is doing this. Today afterchanging the tranny mount *everything was fine before this* i lowered the car back onto the ground and it rolled forward some ....stupid me i shoulda know that something was wrong. But i thought nothing of it i put the key in and started the car and it took offf driving like it was in Drive........the only way i could stop it was turn it off. It crashed into some shelves in my garage and screwed up my whole bumper :-( i had to dive in to turn the key off ....i am petrified to start the car again , the only thing i noticed is that the shifter now moves from R to N to D realllllllllllllllllly easy theres like no resistance and it doesnt have that click feeling to it , same with park

sounds like you knocked loose the shifter linkage, and while doing that, you put the car into drive. haha. simply get under the car and inspect it, if it is disconnected, you'll need to knock the manual linkage (on the transmission) into park. you can be sure its in park by turning the drive shaft. obviously, if it turns freely, you know its not in park. once you know its in part, connect the linkage.

good thing you didnt get run over. that wouldnt have been good. :/

make sure you didnt rip the boot going around the cable through the floor board... i did that once and every gear was forward... aparently i had hung the shifter cable on the trans while i was taking it out.. it was on a 02 ss with like 10,000 miles on it it couldve been really bad if i hadnt left the lift arms under the car thats the only thing that stopped it

It is possible that you broke the shifter cable. Check as advised above. Sorry to hear about this. Vince B

Crawl under the drivers side and flip the lever on the side of the trans forward. That should be park.

Get under there. Its the only lever on the whole tranny. Twist it to click through the gears.

Also could have welded a clutch. If you did some neutral drops or jamming it into reverse going down the highway, park becomes drive and drive becomes reverse

i definatly think its a cable issue , however i am not sure if its broken i think it is just no longer adjusted with the shift selector in the car because no were does it show a sign of being frayed bent broken or torn

its not even loose

what i think happened and would like verification if this is possible

I lowered the transmission down and the cable got pulled into drive while i was messing with the tranny mount when i lowered car to the ground and put key in it took off cuz the selector had been pulled into drive, now that i push the selector back to park i think that it is no longer in sync with the shifter in the car.
