Default Great Debate: Auto VS Stick

Get a nice lil get together of people who deal with the get a stick its faster, I was wondering what do you say in return to that, I was at a party last night and I had 4-5 dudes fighting me saying sticks faster, it got to be annoying because I knew I was right, it seems like alot of people don't know what a stall is and I have a hard time explaining it to them so how do you explain it?

It's just something the average Joe won't ever understand, I deal with it all the time. It is partially true, use the drag strip for example, my car only traps 107-109, but can bust a 12.1 stock internals. To similarly moded cars, one auto one stick, on the track the auto normaly wins, but on a highway roll the manual will probably get the nod assuming it's a good driver. I spent alot for my flt trans and love it, but you can always tell un-educated people when they say ur car is slow simply cause it's an auto. This stigma was born from way way back in the day, before computer tunning and todays technology it was pretty true auto were lazy slugs and manuals normally were faster. I love my auto with an SS4000 but the average Joe will never understand and when u start tryin to explain, talkin about stalls, ect, they will look at you lost. Just tell them to do thier homework before they speak and make themselves seem ignorant.

the way I try to explain it to people is that a good stalled car will run like a banshee when in full throtle... "power band factor"... I just tell them that it puts the car in the powerband more and longer so in turn you are faster..... and well I'm pretty sure if you take a M6 and a auto with the same mods but the auto has a nice stall well I don't see why the auto couldn't win 9 out ot 10 times in the 1/4...

it doesnt even bother me. 9 out of 10 people that say a stick car is faster drive something like a ford Taurus so they have no idea what they are talking about anyways. just bench racers thats all.

you first have to make them feel like they're right, then prove them wrong. tell them yes, most of the time a stock stick car is faster than a stock automatic. then they're all happy like "yay woohoo stick ftw we are awesome stupid autos" and then turn it around by saying: HOWEVER, with a converter, an automatic will outlaunch and shift faster than a manual, also it will never miss a gear, and it will keep the engine's rpm in it's sweet spot. if they care to discuss further a simple "wanna race?" should resolve the issue.

Depends, If you take some of the older 5.0 mustangs with an AOD, Then yes a stick is a hell of a lot faster than an auto. However with big boy toys, Things are diffrent

Faster in what??

Drag racing its going to usually be the auto. It literally takes skill to drive a fast stick car and the added fact that well, you are driving the car.

On a road course, the manual will be faster 9 out of 10 times not to mention a lot more fun to drive as well.

Stick is faster in an underpowered econobox.

Remember, that's what the average non-car guy at a BBQ is familiar with.

Well sticks will trap more so they are faster...A stalled auto will get you there quicker. Stalled autos are also more accurate because it takes out the human era.

I'm the only stalled auto in my group. I wouldn't change over for anything. I love giving them hell from a dig.

actually a little history-back in the day, NHRA had diff classes for the autos or sticks
for example, lets say a stick car was B/S, and if it had an auto, it would be
B/SA-guys back in the day like Ronnie Sox (RIP) could out shift an automatic any day-as auto's progressed, better converters came about, rears changed to diff ratios(the factory used diff ratios if stick or auto)
eventually, the autos were beating the sticks, although a few guys still ran the sticks with sucess
the cars engines were the same, just diff trans
i personally dont care what someone else uses, i prefer an auto, but a stick is fun to drive, untill you get in a 10 mile backup, lol
