Default How to take tranny out with poly motor mounts

I put in poly motor mounts about a month ago and now when i take the trans crossmember off the trans will not drop much at all because the motor mounts are so stiff..
Exhaust is off also.
Making it impossible to put a socket wrench on 2 of the bellhousing bolts.
Anyone else have this problem?
Do I need to unbolt the motor mount and let it hang from a cherry picker or is there an easier way?
thanks

Humm thats weird. I have prothane mounts, I don't think they are broken in because it did not let it hang down at all.
I even took a block of wood and jacked up a little on the front of the oil pan to get it to go down just a little more, and was still the tailshaft only dropped 1-2 inches past where it normally sits with the crossmember in place..

Instad of hookin the motor to a cherry picker and pulling mount bolts, I just had 1 bolt on the driver side that I couldnt get anything on. I'm not too proud to say I took the carpet up cut a slice in the sound deadening stuff and took a vari bit on my die grinder and cut a hole just big enough to get the bolt out from inside..

I'm going to patch it back up when all done but wow.. what a ******* mess. Got the tranny out and called it quits for the night.
All I can say is I hope this stall is worth it..

A picture of the little 'access hole' and in my defense the angle of the picture makes it look bigger than it actually is, a socket just barely fits ahaha

You should have been able to just pull down on the tail shaft to gte the trannys rear to drop down. Make sure the air lid/coupler is disconnected and that there is nothing binding up front.

The poly motor mounts should not be all that stiff.

Haha try it with solid motor mounts...now that was trickier than when I did it with polys.

mine did this as well, next to no drop when you unbolted the trans crossmember. My solution was to place a small scissor type jack inbetween the trans and floor board and jack the tail of the trans down some. Just enough to reach the bolts, dont press on it very hard.

I had nothing binding.
lid, smooth bellow, catback off.
Even a jack right under the front of the oil pan to angle it down a little more.
Those mounts are no joke, made taking the tranny out a royal pain in the ***.

Can you loosen the bolts on the mounts a little?

I got it out and back in, it just made it ridiculously difficult and time consuming.
If your talking about where the pedestal mounts, I would be afraid if I just loosened those 4 bolts it would mess up the threads or possibly break one.

If your talking about the main bolt I believe it would have to be taken all the way out to get good movement.

Maybe these mounts get 'looser' or broken in with age. Sure hope so, or hope I never have to take this tranny out ever again.

Turns a 4hr job into a miserable day and a half.

I have solid mounts and it was retarded to get that trans out and back in. I ended up dropping the k member and letting it just be threaded by a few threads

Yeah thinking back, we only run a poly motor mount on the drivers side on our cars, which explains why we haven't had problems.

I ran into the same problem with the poly motor mounts. I ended up taking off the intake and getting the top bolts from above.

I just went through this yesterday with my poly mounts. I ended up putting a jack under the front of the chassis and dropping the 6 bolts holding it up (car on a lift of course). Dropped the two rear ones completely and the two middle bolts about half way. Dropped the front two a couple turns. This got the engine/tranny down a couple more inches, enough to get at those top bellhousing bolts. PIA. Interesting to see some other people's solutions now that I just did it myself....
