wow, read all 5 pages. there are so many variables for each vehicle, area of operation would be one, converter size etc... these ls engines are designed to run on the hotter side, ergo radiator temp / factory tank temps. Doing a Stand alone only makes Sense to me . course I live in mid FL. if you don't, use a thermostatic switch in line to heat up. I am switching to a plate style as of now with -6 braided lines / AN - jiffy tite fitting ( for easy trans removal) and installing a temp gauge IN THE PAN. my MC has a sizable area between the core support and the A/C condenser and I am installing it in front of my first fan.

We mounted ours to the T-Top well. We got a radiator with no cooler in it. Gives you more coolant capacity and doesn't restrict airflow through the radiator being its not in front of it.. The fan is on a temp sensor that will kick on at 165 degrees. Have never seen the temps go over 170. Usually stays at 150 unless its 100+ degrees outside. Yes we have a trans brake and use it every pass. No we don't run the car in the winter. 40 degrees is the cut off for us. No heat. Otherwise you would need to run it through the radiator also to warm fluid at cold temps.The cooler is the biggest B&M with the fan. The biggest thing I can suggest is to use AN fittings and line to hook up your cooler. We use Fragola PTFE lines. Seen way too many times lines blown off and oiled the track down.

Nice write up.......BUT don't put a tranny cooler or any other type of cooler up against the condensor or radiator. Mount it at least a few inches away from them so the HOT air coming off the backside doesn't go right into the condensor or radiator and cause a hot spot in that big area. Mounting it away from them will let the hot air mix with the ram air off the air dam before it goes into them.

On my 70 Challenger I mounted the trans cooler free floating on its own crossmember forward/lower than the intercooler , but on that car I am really just concerned with cooling the trans during a 1/4 mile pass and not spirited street driving on 100 degree day followed by getting stuck in traffic, then punching the gas when the highway frees up. The free air flow (doesn't look like it from the pic angle, but air is flowing right into it ) works great at speed, but I wouldn't want something without fan suction helping it when stuck in stop and go traffic with a big converter.

Alright, let me ask you guys this. I'm building a 96 Impala SS with an LSA. The 3" heat exchanger I plan to use will sit right in front of the the B&M trans cooler (the trans cooler is mounted directly in front of the AC condenser).
How much is an A2W heat exchanger going to obstruct airflow to the trans cooler? I'm torn right now. If I move the trans cooler to another location then it won't be taking advantage of the radiator fans sucking in air and any other free location I have doesn't have good airflow. Trying to keep it simple so not looking to do a rear mount and trying not to run an auxiliary fan for the trans cooler if I can avoid it. Should I be concerned or is it really not that big of a deal to run it behind the A2W HX?

I believe it's just because of the "2 coolers is better than 1" theory. However, B&M reccomended this (NOT bypassing the original cooler), so I just followed instructions I geuss. I know some people swear by bypassing the OE cooler...IDK what the advantage of that would be.

Place the trans cooler in front of the heat exchanger/intercooler (and everything else) to avoid heating the trans fluid.

Thank you... is there any math to check this or is 8t a trial and error thing? Lol. As far as I can tell no coolant transferred to the tranny. To be safe I'm going to flush it anyway.

Someone asked about the 6AN x 1/4 NPS only fitting certain 4l60e's. They changed to 9/16"-18 threads in 2008--same threads as the radiator aluminum fitting for many years (after inverted flare lines on TH350/TH400, etc.)
