Hey guys hit a dead end im looking to upgrade the stock stall. The car is a 98 Z28 with a 40k mile a4 4L60E. Mods are in sig along with 2.73 gears.

My question(I have read the stickies and used the search button) which stall would be most suitable for a street car with the occasional trip to the track. I search and half the responses are get a yank 3600 and call it a day, or 2.73s suck.

Anyone with experience or a 2.73 set up advice would be great. I would like something somewhat tight(first stall alot + of nj traffic). I'm thinking a 3200 undecided on str. Any suggestions/opinons?

-Not really looking to swap rears or gears if I can get the right stall.

I have 323 gears and dd a 3600 FTI I love it no problems. Traffic or whatever it is so great. Feels so much faster and good track times in FL heat very consistant.

 

how is the throttle? What rpms does the car start to move at? What str did you go with?

If you drive normal there is no difference. On a flat level surface it will move a little at idle not fast but it does move. Idle is not high either. To build up speed it takes very little throttle. When you get into get it slips but not bad unless you are deep into it, then it hits like a ton of bricks. I love it.

FTI makes a nice tight converter. Im happy with my 2800. very nice to daily drive. Mine has a 2.0str.


Any converter you choose will feel a little more loose because of the 2.73 gear ratio so take that into consideration. You shouldnt have any issues at all otherwise.

 

coming from 2.73 myself..HIGHLY advise you to do gears and stall at the same time.

match the stall to the cam you're planning to run.

general rule
big cam = 3600-4400 stall
small/med cam = 2800-3200 stall

 

I really have no plans to cam the car in the future so looking like under 3200 if I keep the 273s?

 

This is really a personal preference type thing. I personally love a loose stall. I chose a loose stall because it will be loose down low but be more efficient up top which is where it really matters to me. But again thats personal preference. I have a loose 4k circle d stall and a 228 cam and would not hesitate to daily my car, but other people would not like to dd that type of setup.

 

Whether you do gears or not you DEFINATELY want to upgrade the stall. It is by far the absolute best mod you can do to an auto car and I think anyone will agree that has modded an auto car. The yank SS3600 is an excellent stall, I had a yank PYE3400, but it was made for big nitrous and/or blower cars making 800+ hp so I could only stall it to around 2500 at the track, which was cool on the street cause it stalled lower than that so I didnt spin as bad, but really sucked at the track, then I went to a Yank SS3800 and boy, at the track its a different animal all together and I can get rolling out from a stop at a decent pace at about 1200-1400 RPM.

It will slip a little more with your 2:73 gears but like I said you are going to want to do a stall either way. If you lived closer you could come drive mine and you would be sold. Also BTW I have 3:23's in my garage just sitting that I would let go. And there are also alot of guys with 3:42's from their 6 speed cars around. So when you do get gears they are easy to find those ratio's pretty cheap.

 

FTI 3600 here and it's a little loose. Don't know the str but she gets moving between 1000-1500. I haven't paid close attention to it

i have a vig 3600. very streetable and responsive. maybe i need to hit the gas a little to get moving but its no big deal.
