Default Article about 4L65E in Super Chevy!

I'm interested in this tranny but after reading the article,I do not understand HOW they lowered the shift points from 6100 to 5600 when this tranny is rated for the power of the LS6.Is this a misprint?

It's rated by torque limit I reckon, the 5-gear planetaries
aren't as well lubricated as the 4L60-E 4-gear so they don't
want to spin it as fast. It started as a truck tranny I believe.

i thought the 5-gear were better than the 4-gear planetaries.

Stronger, but not faster. Something about the "axle" being solid
and not having an oil passage I think. Less oil flow cooling then.
I figure the aftermarket will soon learn to pick & choose the best
off the '65 (for expense), the case is no big improvement if at
all, and the marginal improvement in rated torque is going to
drive anyone intending serious abuse to a rebuild and its
expense anyway... I don't see the '65 as any kind of "crate
tranny" solution. It's just a way of keeping truck warranty
claims down, as cheaply as possible, the way I see it. Just
hoping the good parts get cheaper, where they apply.

i have a 65. the 5600 rpm thing is just GM being conservative i think. i rev mine out to 6K or so without any problem. also for cars like mine that go fairly fast for their mod level but dont make real big power, it seems like a good solution given the fact that its brand new, is FACTORY built and has a warranty. also their are two different versions of the 4L65E. the truck trans is not the same as the GMPP/Holden trans. also, i've found that there are a couple other upgrades not mentioned in that article. for one, the GMPP version DOES have a corvette servo. also the clutches are "Hi-Energy". theyre pretty much one step above stockers and one step below Alto reds.

Thanks, I figured this was a misprint after reading an article in Autoweek on the 2005 Corvette, which they talk about the 4L65E and how GM raised the shift points for the Corvette. So by buying the perf. parts version it will rev to 6100. Ed

well like i said, mine seems to work fine. i make no guarantees that it wont break eventually but for the time being its holding up well.

I was reading something from GM about the 5-pinion planetaries, and it said that they use teflon in the pinions, along with some other go high-speed (trick, not fast) stuff in them to keep them durable (oh yeah, it was an article abou the C6, I just remembered).

Anyhow, that's probably why they got rid of the oil passages through the pinions (better strength).

If you look at FLP's site, they have a level 5 version out that uses the GM 5 pinion planetary gears adn other hard parts from the 4L65E.

The truck 65E doesn't have a vette servo from the factory.
