I want to do another fluid flush. Does the trans take 5 qts? I believe the owners manual says it does, but why does the dip stick read high after warm-up? I just want to drop the pan and change the filter, no overhaul needed.

 

I believe only the pan holds 5 qts. I think the whole tranny holds around 12 qts.

 

I swear everytime I dump mine it takes a different amount!

5 is about right.. but I'd have a couple extra quarts just in case. If it's a fresh rebuild or new, have 12 quarts on hand.

The tranny dip stick should be checked with the engine running. Use the markings for warm/cold for the proper level.

 

Yes, I added 5, but the stick looks over filled! I did check running and warm..I think that stick is not accurate

 

I would trust the stick.

If it's over filled, you need to drain some out.

Hopefully you have a drain plug.

I've dropped the pan 4 times on mine, each time it's been 5 qts right on the money. Actually the 4th time I didn't even check it, it was always right on before. :shrug: If you want to be really cautious, you can put 4.5 in, run till it's warmed good and recheck following the GM procedure of cycling through the gears. These trannys seem to be real sensitive to fluid level from what I've been told.
And there is no drain plug from the factory, at least on the F Bods.

 

it sounds dumb but remember to flip the stick over when you check it. its easy to pull the stick out, run it against the wall of the dipstick tube and think theres fluid all the way up the tube, flip it over and read that side....it takes A LOT of fluid to overfill a tranny.
