i have a street car im building should be making 550 rwhp its a heavy i car i decided to keep my ac etc... my question is im lost on which trans to go with friends so go th400 but i want to be able to travel the highway etc bout an hour drive to a good meet spot so i want to kepp overdrive just not sure imy 4l60e can handle it as i blew my first at 20k 2nd at30k and 3rd at 35k any suggestions recommendations budget is somewhat tight 3k ish thanks for any advice in advance im running a masterpower t70 at 10 psi on stock block
At the hp you are talking about a well built 4l60e should handle it just fine with a good tune. It seems that tuning is an issue in most cases. If you don't feel comfortable with a 60 and want to keep the OD you will need to looking a 4l80e. Its basically a th400 with an over drive. If you have any other questions just ask. Vince
i ran a 4L80E in my 69 @ 3900 lbs, over 620 RWHP
i built it myself with nothing special, TCI HD-2 kit-it took everything i threw at it-just driving around in o/d, unlocked, i saw a huge diff in fuel usage
i drove it a couple times over 160 miles to a beach cruise, reduced exhaust noise, 19 MPG (carbed, running rich)
whats not to like, lol
or, poor mans o/d, 3.00+ rear gears, 2.75 first gear turbo 400, lol

My Level 4 from Finish Line Transmissions will be done here soon. I'm not making any big numbers right now, but I wanted my new trans to be able to handle future plans...like running 10s.
FRESHEN-UP POLICY: AFTER THE WARRANTY PERIOD EXPIRES (6 MONTHS) FLT WILL REFRESH OR UPGRADE ANY OF IT'S TRANSMISSIONS TO OUR LATEST SPECIFICATIONS FOR $250.00 LABOR PLUS THE COST OF PARTS & SHIPPING.
That sold me right there.

I had Vince build my 4l65e similar to FLT's level 5 build. Has been running strong for the past year, even though I still haven't ran at my planned boost level on it.

I've seen Level 3s running high 10s in the quarter...which is pretty good. I had to do the Level 4 since it was only ~$300 more. They are willing to work with you too...some of the best accommodating I've seen from a shop.

ya man i havent ran it yet still waiting to get a trans before i get it dyno tuned but seems like a good quality part just search the forums u will find a deal have u posted in the parts wanted area? also check out truestreetcars.com its a local forum for us new mexico guys but we get some good deals from time to time
Cool man thanks. I found a group buy thru the forum so well see if its still in effect. I plan on running a very similar set up as you. I'm also thinking about going with a flt level 3.
Right now only 4lbs. Will be running closer to 10lbs this summer. Thanks, granted that photo is from about 2 years ago. Stance is a little different and I now run a set of forged wheels.
Not a problem. If you're doing the install yourself and your trans is perfectly fine now...the difference you make in selling a good trans vs paying for a core could pay for a level 4.
