Took my TH400 to the shop to get a Hipster brake installed. It has a "hot rod" rebuild (blue clutches, HD drum and sprag...) and a full manual valve body. Shop pulled it apart and told me second gear band is burnt. As I understand it that band only works when you "gear down" in second?? What would make it burn? I'm guessing it must be dragging because I never "gear down." Bought the car used and have no idea if the former owner did. The transmission guy said not to worry about it as he is just going to remove it. Just wondering...

Yep, intermediate band is used for engine braking in 2nd gear. With no band, when you let off the gas, it will act like neutral.

idk why there was a 2nd gear band there in the first place with a RVMB

With the Hipster brake or any brake that I've used you remove the intermediate brake band and servo assembly just FYI.
