Default 4l60E shift issue.

I have a stock 99 A4 WS6. For the last couple days it has all of a sudden stopped shifting from 2 to 3 at WOT. After searching a bit it seems most people say its usually a tune problem but my car has never been tuned. So am i looking at the 3-4 clutch pack or could it be something else? And if it is the clutch pack how much am i looking at to get that replaced.

Try putting the lever in second and manually shift it to 3. If it still doesn't engage, then its probably the 2-3 gear band. I had the same issue from 1-2 gear.

When a 4l60e begins to slip on the 2/3 upshift it is only a matter of time before it will lose the 3/4 clutch pack entirely. On a transmission in a car that old, I seriously doubt you will find a shop that will only go in and replace that clutch pack. What you are asking about is referred to as a "patch job" in our industry. It needs more than that. If you are going to go to the time, trouble and expense to remove the transmission or pay to have it removed, then you owe it to yourself to have yours built up to at least a mild performance level as the factory did a remarkably crummy job of designing not only the 3/4 clutch pack but the entire unit.

There are several updates and upgrades you should consider, any of the Sponsors here will have varying degrees of of builds that can and will accomodate your budget. If you would like to discuss some options I would be happy to make the time to speak to you. I do that for folks most every day.

There is no such thing as a "2/3 band" in a 4l60e. There is a band inside this transmission that is applied in 2nd gear and in 4th gear. It is released in 3rd gear. It is possible that you had a band failure if you had issues with a 1/2 shift... but not if there is a 2/3 issue like the original poster is describing.

Just want to help you understand what you are talking about.

So i got a 700 mile trip this weekend. Can i rely on the car to make it or should i expect the clutch pack to fully go real soon.

Great question. I recently rebuilt a very nice 60e that I had built for a client back in 10/07. He had very similar symptoms. He asked the very same question after I had driven it and diagnosed it. There is no way to predict when it will fail. I can tell you that William only got two weeks out of his after I had driven it with him.

Honestly, knowing what I know I personally would not take that trip with a wounded 4L60E. But, just as quick as I say that, it will go another 5k miles. Either way it's just a matter of time before it fails.
