Long drives with a TH400 Ok guys I have a 99 TA A4 and have a built motor gonna be pushin around 420ish rwhp and i'm going to with nitrous with time. I can't decide to go with a built TH400 or built T56 I still wanna drive the car and not trailer it everywhere. So what i'm asking is there anybody out there that does take long trips in there Th400 and how is it ? And when I say trips I would love to go on the power tour or drive it to LSFest etc. so if ya'll could let me know that would be great.

If you're running any kind of gear be ready for 3k+ rpm on the freeway, and you'll still be getting passed. My old daily had a th350 and 3.23 gears, turned 2700-3000 pretty much all the time on the freeway for ~ an hour each way to work. It's liveable, and once you get used to it it's not a big deal. Remember that before OD transmissions were put together so well 3 speeds were it, depends on you and what you think is too much.
My T56, I could average under 2K (1960 usually) at 70 MPH in 6th gear!!!
My TH400, I average about 3600 at 70 MPH..... For cruising, the T56 is fantastic! For economy, the T56 again wins, for fun, I'll say the T56, but drag racing.... TH400 all the way!

Or just put a overdrive tranny in it like a 4l60e or 4l80e and you can cruise down the road just fine. And they can be built to take just about anything I have seen a feel people running 80's at around 1000hp to the ground. Flt also has 2 vehicles there are nearly in the 8's with 60's. I dont see the point of running a 3spd tranny unless its a track only car or you dont plan on driving on long trips.
DO NOT DO THE TH400 IF YOU PLAN ON DRIVING THE CAR A LOT. If you are going to just drive a little bit then its ok. Cruising at 50mph or less and some occasional blasts its ok, but if you are going to get out on the freeway and go 10 miles or more then a 400 sucks. I kicked the th400 in favor of a 4l80e that I am still working on swapping.
Thanks for the info I doubt i'm going to go with a TH400 due to wanting to drive my car, who builds good 80's ? I know who builds good T56's thanks for all the input guys.....

Verdad Gallardo Yank built a 4l80e for my buddy but the car isn't done yet, Flt is the god of 4l60e's I am guessing your car isn't gonna be a 1000rwhp monster so why not just run a 4l60e in it. I'm sure it will be more then enough for you plus it doesn't weigh as much as the 80e.
I drive my th400/4.11 to the track sometimes, 70mi round trip. 55mph is about all I can tolerate. If it was a turbo car with a low 3.xx gear, prolly wouldn't be bad at all
These guys are no joke.... My buddys 800+ rwhp ttlsx408 mustang ran one daily lol also using one in my buddys lsx single turbo typhoon build. If i switch to an 80e in the Nova they are who in calling.
I'm at 3400-4k on the freeway with my setup.... th400 4,10's and a 28.5 inch tall tire.

GM builds a good 4L80E, you could use just about any stock 4L80E and it will work great, holds tons of power without really anything. But consider the weight and rotating mass.
I just broke the input shaft in my 4L60E. ive got just under 500hp at the crank. i will be upgrading to a hardened input shaft and drum.
