Strange problem with 4l60E, third gear.
Ok, So I picked up a 1998 Formula recently with a few known mods, which include a built 4l60e with a yank 3600.
Today me and the lady went on a trip to her folks house, a 200 mile highway drive.
Cruising at 75 with no problems, I set the cruise control, after a few miles I noticed the RPMS bouncing.
I immediately exited the free way and noticed the tranny began to free spin, after coming to a complete stop, it down shifted to first and I began to accelerate, and the 1-2 shift was firm as normal, but the 2-3 spun freely, letting off I felt it downshift to 1st.
I was then able to accelerate hard, and it shifted all gears normally under acceleration. This continued the whole trip, if I soft pedaled it 2-3 would slip, if I was firm in it, normal shifts.
I have no idea what this can be, as I forced it to limp mode and 3rd gear was fine.
CLIFF NOTES: Car will only shift into third under acceleration.

Changed a and b solenoids, but I think the drivers side one may have been messed up, the coil was a bit bent.
No metal in the pan, fluid seemed to be fresh, smelled clean.
Only strange thing I noticed was there was no magnet in the pan.
STILL doing the same thing.
Any ideas? My wallet can afford a rebuild right now.

Wouldint the fluid be burnt if that was the case? I am really hoping i dont need to rebuild, I just really cant afford it.
What would i be looking at for a rebuild?

or you can just skip that and rebuild the tranny.because more than likely any diagnositcs will be pointing to a rebuild anyway.there will be 200 people within 50 miles of you that can take the 4l60e apart and put it back together.they will also claim that they have been "rebuilding trnsmissions for 25 years".but these transmissions require someone with extensive knowledge of the combination of hydraulics and hard parts to make one last more than the warranty period.im just sayin...do your homework.there are only a few people in the country that can make one of these last.

A few years ago I rebuilt a 700r4, but was way over my head with it and took me a few weeks.
I cant afford for the car to be down for to long as it is my daily, and with Christmas around the corner I don't have 2k to drop on a rebuild.
How hard would it be to pull the tranny? Maybe buy a rebuild and do a swap.

I had not seen this thread before I responded to your p.m.
Seriously, you're too close to me to not give me a call and discuss your options in great detail. I understand you just bought the car. I understand you just experienced issues with a major powertrain component. I get that, I earn my living every day just like the next guy.
Call me. Tomorrow is not too soon...tonight may be as Mr. Patron may answer! :-)
Just kiddin, seriously I'm hanging Christmas lights with my girfriend and her son tomorrow so don't heaitate to call me! :-)

yeah.go get a budget rebuild and see what happens.even if you buy a swap from a sponser, you're looking at 2k with shipping and fluid.a good quality rebuild is not a $1000 or even $1500.do your homework.otherwise i would just tell you to go to the best transmission builder in the entire world....mad dog lou.
joking of course. mad dog lou
