Default Tell me how this happens....4L60E...**UPDATE** for those interested

When I take off with a cold car.....start it up and go.

Its slipping......I give it some casual pedal to accelerate and it slips.....then slowly engages over like 6-10 seconds. Then it cruises down the road normally. After it warms up, that slipping stops and it takes off from a stop normally and accelerates normally. Also, if I get on it, its normal....but only after it warms up.

What the hell.............

UPDATE

Vacuum modulator failed. TransGo sent me a new one for free......they cover them forever I guess. I had my kit installed back in 2002.......

Fluid is full, clean and smells new.

If the fluid was low...wouldn't it run messed up all the time, cold or hot?

when the fluid is hot it will expand. thats why there is a hot and cold fill level. low cold level usually will cause that problem. since its full though you might have a drum that is ring grooved. the sealing rings will wear grooves in a drum causing a pressure leak. if thats the issue then its rebuild time. good luck. hope this helps!

Ah, ok, thanks. Maybe thats the deal. Just sucks because this thing was rebuilt 8 months ago. Usually my rebuilds are good for 3-4 years. Oh well.

I assume if I let it warm up for a little bit before I drive away, would that help?

Try running 1/2 quart (1 pint) overfull and see if it still does that

(you shouldn't see froth on dipstick, but if you do then remove the extra fluid).

My cold level is already at the top of the "WARM" level.......

Damn.......I guess a rebuild is in order. This sucks because I'm putting in a brand new Jakes 4L80E soon, along with the new powerplant. I can't believe this damn thing couldn't last just three more months.

Is there any product like "Engine Honey" that will thicken up my tranny fluid.........??

I would normally NEVER add anything to my tranny fluid....but if it'll get me through 2-3 months....what the hell....

Thanks for the update.

I'm curious though.... the vacuum modulator modifies line pressure. That being said, low engine vacuum = high line pressure and high vacuum = low pressure.

The only modulator I have seen fail allowed fluid to enter the diaphram cavity which in turn caused the engine to smoke profusely when it ingested the tranny fluid. If the modulator sees no signal line pressure is high... I'm curious to know the nature of the failure. I can't say as I've ever seen one "stick" in a low pressure position and not be sucking tranny fluid, which would imply a ruptured diaphram internally.

Just curious....

I started thinking about it and Gil is correct, I too am curious now...

Does your old modulator leak oil from its vacuum port...?

If the modulator failed by way of ruptured diaphragm, then part throttle upshifts would feel hard/harsh and there would be no slipping;

I'm wondering if vacuum could get trapped inside the modulator (clogged/restricted/collapsed vacuum line)...?
