Default 4L60 disassembly help needed

So im tearing into my 4L60E. I have disassembled the valve body and removed the 2-4 accumulator. I pryed my front pump loose and it came out about an inch.. inch and a half. It wont come out any further. I pryed and pulled and nothing. Any ideas? do i need some bigger guns to pry on this or what? ive done a few 4wd 4ls but this is my first 2wd. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a snap ring that holds in the input clutch assembly or does it come out w/ the pump?

I know the pump comes straight out with no snap ring but does the input assembly come out with it? or does the assembly come out seperately from the pump?

it comes out seperate from the pump... the input shaft runs through the middle of the pump and has 3 teflon rings that may be binding you up.

There is a spot through the case where you can get good leverage on the pump with a large screwdriver. I also use a vicegrip clamped on a lip on the other side of the pump. This lets me pull straight up/out.

As mentioned, the input shaft has 3 teflon rings and the pump's stator shaft has another 2 teflon rings. If any of them are binding, just pull through it as they need to be replaced anyway. BTW - Replacing those teflon rings requires $300+ in tools; or let a local trans shop do it for you.

I used a small screw driver and old soda bottle and a few hose clamps for those rings went together easy

Did you remove the O-ring on the input shaft?

EDIT: $300 in tools to replace the teflon rings? What?

For the input shaft, the teflon ring installer and resizer tools is typically $200 and the similar tools for stator shaft at least another $100.

E.g.:
http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-000t1574z.htm

Or $185 for the input shaft:
http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/T-1574.html
Another $185 for the stator shaft:
http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/T-1503.html

These are very typically (even low) prices for these tools and less than what they are on Ebay for new tools.

.I have rebuilt a couple 400s and some 4l60s with no j tools ,but you have to home build some tools though, clutch spring compressor, seal sizer, and a low reverse compressor.Pop bottle plastic does wonders when installing piston seals and sizing seals.

Yes, the spring compressors are essential - I bought two and welded up one for the reverse drum. A local trans shop did the teflon rings for me at no charge since I bring them business; hence I didn't try to install them myself.
I am going to try the pop bottle plastic for the pistons since I ruined a seal last week trying to use a feeler blade.

I've done everything mentioned. I've had a buddy pulling on 2 vice grips while i was prying with a screw driver. It just doesnt seem to want to come out. Makes me wonder what kind of catastrophic FAIL! is waiting for me once I get it apart.

Wow! I'll guess there was a major "fail" between the stator shaft and rings, and the reverse drum. You will need a new reverse drum ($70) and new stator shaft ($40). It might not be too bad.

Came in to say that bro, you do not need to pony up $300+ for "special tools" to put those seals on.

The tools work well when in a production environment but usually aren't worth the cost for a one or two time builder.

The J tools aren't cheap. I own the 4L60E tools and rarely use them.

Makes perfect sense. A guy once told me that a lot of builders will stretch the seals a bit to put them on, then wrap them tightly in electrical tape and leave them for a day and they are just fine. I've also seen some people fabricate (and cheaply I might add) their own tools to put them on that work quite well

Good discussion about tools. Are there any videos of how to install the teflon rings without the tools?
I just wanted to point out that these rings/seals are not trivial to put on and suggest having a local trans shop do it for you.

We seem to be off topic - LS1RatRod: did you ever get your oil pump off? What what the problem/solution?
