Default Performabuilt 4l60E Level 2 Broke after 3,000 miles?

About a year ago my Performabuilt level 2 lost 4th gear. All other gears and lockup still worked. Seeing how this is my weekend fun and bracket racing car with a track 7 miles from my house I was able to live without 4th. A month ago I decided I’d like to drive to some other tracks to race so I better get 4th gear fixed. I called Frank at Performabuilt and we did some trouble shooting over the phone. It was suggested to me to add another stock black washer along side of the gold washer he puts in his servos (washer measures .088). The reason behind this was the 4th gear band may have stretched and this would help tighten it up. I did this and the car worked like a dream, 60 mph @ 1,900 rpm.

Until a week later when I started having issues shifting from 2nd-3rd at WOT. As soon as I hit the gas at cruising speed the car sounds like it’s on the rev limiter and doesn’t shift or accelerate and the computer is not commanding 3rd. A couple days later it started not shifting from 1st-2nd from a stop even though the computer is commanding 2nd. I have to let of the gas and then it shifts from 1st-3rd. I haven’t changed my tune or anything else for that matter, fine one day and these issues the next. Friday I decided to take the washer out and see if it would go back to how it was before and even with the washer out I’m still having these issues. I drained a little fluid out of the pan and it looks dark and dirty with some small debris. I’ve attached my tune and scan from a quick drive.

My Questions
1. Could this be anything other than a burnt up transmission?
2. Should a well built 4l60E hold up to a 425-450 rwhp bracket racing car or should I be looking at a different transmission?
3. If a 4l60E is what I should stick with do you guys recommend sending it to Frank to have him fix it or someone else? I’m in central Illinois and would be nice to have a builder within driving distance.

Thanks for any help,
Alex

From the looks of things the 2-4 band has failed why is hard to say The unit was purchased 1/12/2010 by another individual, The washer was worth a shot but it does seem its a more serious issue, While we cannot warranty a unit that old obviously we can offer the restore option 995 which includes shipping one way all parts ad labor and gives you a new warrany. Normallywe do not extend this option beyond the original buyer However since you say its such low miles I will make an exception in this case.

Two questions Frank. What's the best way to package a transmission for shipping? Have you ever put a trans break in a 4L60e?

If you send me an email at info@performabuilt.com i will reply with a warranty authorization, though yours is not warranty it contains various packaging methods.

Did the continued driving after 4th gear failed basically cause the ending demise of this trans though? If the band was slipping, then wouldn't continued slipping send clutch debris through the trans?
