Doing my Jakes 4l80e swap soon. Anything I'm missing?
Hi all, so my bother in law and I will be doing my 4l80e swap in the coming weeks and I believe I have all my bases covered, but if I'm missing something let me know. We got access to a lift and trans jake so I'm hoping everything will go smooth. I'm done swapping broke 4l60e's in and out every other month.
What I have ordered from Jakes:
Stg5 4l80e w/shoebrake2
BMR Crossmember
Derale Cooler(fan), lines, fittings
Yoke
Dipstick
What I ordered from Yank
PY3400 (6bolt converter)
Other stuff i've got
TCI flexplate for LS1/4l80e w/ 6bolt converters
14q of Castrol Dex/Merc ATF
Speartech 4l60e-4l80e harness adapter(still need to order)
I have also reached out to HPTuners support and they were able to do a segment swap on my tune file and got that back to me. I have the latest beta version of HPTuners so hoping I don't have that lockup issue others have had with older versions of HPTuners.
If I'm missing anything let me know. I have never done this swap and my hope is that I can plan enough ahead to make this smooth as possible.
Thanks
-Will

You don't need the speartech harness adaptor and you can run the 4L60E segment in your tune. Talk to slow67 all it takes is a couple of wires changed and a relay added. He's the guy that did all the hard thinking to make it work

So is the slow67 wire mod with relay a cheaper DIY variety to what the speartech harness does? Is there any difference between the two outside of the price difference? I don't recall seeing a relay on the speartech harness.

willizm take my advice, I did the 4L80 swap, spend the $20 and get the diagram but more important is slow67 has spent alot of time studying the 4L80 and can help you if you have any issues.
Hey what's "shoebrake2"?

Yeah I'm getting in contact with him to try it. The shoebrake2 is their forward gear trans brake. From what I gather it's rather new, but the benefit is that I can stage the car in 3, hold the button, build up some boost/rpm, let go and boogy. No shifting 1-2-3. The other trans brake requires you to stick it in 1st and shift it into 3rd while this one is a little more automated. Only caveat is that If I want to put the car in reverse I have to hold down the button.

With an 80E tune (and any decent bigger converter), lets say you cruising down the highway. You come up to some traffic, and let off the throttle completely to slow down (but don't have to touch the brakes). You converter unlocks, and your engine revs up. Lets say the car that was going to be in your way moves out of the way. You get back in the throttle a little bit (enough to continue cruising again) and the converter has to re-lock.
With a 60E tune, as long as you don't hit the brakes, the converter stays locked. I even have my DFCO turned up a bit, so it cuts fuel and engine brakes (works well when taking exits).

Let me get this straight . . .
The 60E Tune is 100% compatible with the 4L80E transmission and the only difference between it and the 80E Tune is when. or if, the torque converter unlocks, right ?
