I don't know the answer to this, but let me get the discussion started...

The '99 Z28 trans will be an LS-compatible trans with a 300mm input shaft which in turn accepts an LS-compatible 300mm torque converter.
I could be wrong, but from what I have read and remember, the nose of an LS-converter will not fit correctly into LT engine's crankshaft opening.
Other than having a custom converter built, I don't know if there is a spacer or other solution to this.

I know the general advice will be to simply find a '96 or '97 trans which should be readily available. Your buddy should be able to sell his '99 for more than you can buy a properly fitting '97.

I look forward to corrections, updates or solutions to this...

The electrical connector is the same and the tuning/shifting are compatible too.
However that seems a mute point if it doesn't physically fit/work together.

You could most likely have someone make you a custom converter but at that point it would probably be cheaper/easier to find correct parts or fix what you already have.
