Derale Cooler Pan..
Has anyone used one of these? I'm thinking about getting one.. are they as effective as an auxillary trans cooler mounted up front?

above the tubes, so you have more hang-down for no
benefit in fluid-level-over-filter. I much prefer the truck
pan and truck filter.
effective", no way. You're airflow limited through
those tubes, only road draft, and have much less
"fin area".
Sometimes doing what you don't want to do, is
still the right answer.
You might get away without a cooler with a stock converter, but with any high stall converter you will need a big cooler. I don't remember the exact numbers now, but if a trans lasts 100,000 miles at 150F, it will last only 10,000 miles at 200F; they hate extra heat.

One of the times you really need a trans cooler is during stop-and-go traffic where you are constantly accelerator below the stall speed of the converter. With no air flow under the car, it will get very hot.
People buy expensive gimmicks and their pride makes them want to believe it works, and they then claim it works.
The truck pan is a good choice; it holds an extra quart which by itself will lower temperatures. (That is probably the only way that pan lowers temps anyway.) Also avoid chrome plated oil pans - over the time the chrome plating corrodes and leaves paths for oil leaks. After several tries, I found an ebay seller with a deep (1 extra quart) aluminum pan.
