Default noob 4l80e question

Hi Guys,
I'm having a hell of a time finding a 2wd 4l80e trans.
am I even looking for one or are the masses using the 4wd version with some sort of modding?

Thanks
Warren

car-part.com
ebay.com
craigslist.com

I picked up a 2001 4L80e from a 2wd 1500HD for $500 on craigslist complete with lower cover, correct flywheel and converter. It had 98K miles on it and is working fine. You can get a good deal if you can be patient and check around. Just figure whatever you pay for one might end up being what you pay for a core so be careful how much you end up investing in one.

Good luck.

4wd will need a new tailshaft for 2wd. You can use an LS-style 4L80 99+ or an older 4L80 with the 6-bolt bellhousing for the older small blocks. The extra bolt won't make a difference but you'll need the correct flywheel and torque converter. If you have a 4L60, you can buy a converter that works with your flywheel.

After reading the stickies and the how-to post here on the site. The tranny he used is the exact one i can buy. 02 model from a 2500 hd pickup.

He didnt mention anything about swaping tailshafts.

I know the converters are diff. Wiring isnt a issue.

4wd has a transfer case bolted to the rear of the transmission. There is no way to make that work in an F-body or 2wd application without changing the tail out to a 2wd one. If you have the 8" aluminum cone on the rear without the transfer case, then it is a 2wd transmission and not a 4wd. If you got a heck of a deal on a 4wd tranny and you are using it in a 2wd, you will have to change the tail to 2wd.

Where in Canada? I live in South Louisiana and I had a Toyota 7MGTE shipped from Montreal for $300 IIRC. If you are anywhere near Michigan, it may be worth a drive across the border. I don't know how easy it would be to take back, but I see them go for beans in the Great Lakes states a lot. Not sure if that helps, but it's all I've got.

thanks for the info! any round about idea what the tail shaft cost to change it out?

I can get this 02 tranny with two sets of guts and a shift kit for 450. and hes local. but if its not worth swaping parts, I may just buy one already done and ready to bolt in.

I've seen the components on flea bay new for pretty cheap (I think they are anyway) but I think you have to install the new tailshaft and that's best left to a shop and I don't know for sure what it would cost. I would call around for a quote. I think a used output shaft is $50, plus seals, bearings and labor. You're looking $200-250 if it can be done pretty easily.

I'd say get a quote on changing it over with and without a rebuild. You may be farther ahead going through it and changing the tailshaft at the same time.

When I got mine for $500 I figured that if it was another $1200 to rebuild, I'd still be in it about what I was going to spend on rebuilding my T56, buying a new clutch and all new hydraulics. I put it in assuming I was just test fitting and crossed my fingers it would work. It's been running for about a week and so far it's been fine. I'm digging the A4 with the M6 axle (3.42) but not my MPG. 18.3 best so far.

Mpg is deff not what my old 6spd car was. Lol. This car has a 3.42 gear in it as well.

I'll probably go 9" with a 3.50 gear set when I put my LQ9 in. I almost never road trip so my DD mileage is the same, and the handful of trips I might take where it costs me MPG won't offset the grins from the higher ratio. The only thing I didn't care for was that my T56 in 5th (0.75) at cruise would be around 22mpg. So I'm hoping my average comes up some. I don't need it to be a civic, but my Silverado VHO gets 19 hwy so I'd like the car to at least best a 5300lb truck with a 6.0 and 3.73s. The gas in it is a mix of what was left from September so I'm hoping as I fill up a time or two, the mpg will come up some.

NP. Even for a core that's a great price. Good luck and I hope it turns out to be in good condition internally.
