Will a 4L60e with 50k be ok, with my mods? I have 99 trans am, Ls6 intake, ported throttle body, RPM3 cam, smooth bellows, headers, SlP m1 and 85mm MAF. Not a track car. Maybe a pass or 2 to see what it will do. I'm saving for a trans but I wanted to make sure it will last for a short period of time.

 

I think you will be just fine. It would be silly to remove a good working trans just to install a better built one.

 

Sometimes they last sometimes they don't. My car was stock and never raced for the first 100k miles, it has 157k on it now and has had over 400whp for those 57k miles, ran multiple mid 11 sec passes and gets driven every day.

 

is there anything simple or cheep to make them hold up better?

 

I'm daily driving and racing the crap out of my car with the stock trans putting 430 to the wheels. More than likely you'll be okay

I'd get the 70274, but if you want to save a few bucks the 70266 will be just fine too.

 

Also, a Transgo HD-2 shift kit. Especially if you're running a hi-stall converter. It gives a lot of tweaks that improve oiling, clutch life and other benefits. Lately I've learned from Mrvedit about some of the Sonnax pieces that can help without breaking the bank.

120k on mine with countless track passes and daily driving.

 

As RevGTO mentions, the Transgo HD2 shift kit is a good choice for a trans that is still in good condition. The Sonnax Performance Pack is a good alternative to the HD2 as it includes nice parts such as pinless pistons and the desirable servo release valve. Since both require removing the valve body and servo, and drilling the separator plate and replacing many springs, they might be outside some people's comfort zone. A local trans builder should be able to install either in about 2 hours; better to find someone who has installed either before.

If either shift kit is installed, I would highly recommend also installing the Sonnax HD 2-3 shift valve. The trans is then stronger when raced in D3. (The overrun clutches will then share the load with the forward sprag in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear.)

Some benefits of the shift kits can be realized by just installing a bigger boost valve such as the Sonnax 4L60E-LB1. (-LB2 for '06 and later) This only requires dropping the pan and filter and using snap ring pliers to replace the boost valve. This will increase line pressure across the board and increase the maximum line pressure at WOT. Less than $30. Shifts will be slightly firmer, but I suspect most people on this forum will be OK with that.

However as mentioned, a bigger cooler is the #1 improvement.
