Thanks for all the replies guys. I suppose it is something I will learn to live with. I just wanted to make sure that it going that high is standard for the swap. I do plan on moving up to a larger cam when I get some nice heads but that will likely be at least a year down the road. I'll drive it around some more and keep an eye on the fluids. I'll just need to adjust my driving routes to spend more time at highway speeds

Take a vid and post it. The SS series from Yank is tighter than the standard converters. I have a SS3800 and the car will slowly move at around 2200 rpms with 2.73 gears. 3000rpms and I'm leaving traffic.

Sounds like a 4000 is a lot looser than the 3600 after all. Pretty sure I won't be having mine restalled like I was thinking about if this is normal.

I can keep up with traffic at around 2000rpm with mine.

I spent some time today putting a few more miles on it but still in the break in period for the new converter. I don't know if the fact that it has more miles on it now or that I am adjusting too the way it drives, but it is getting better. I believe that part of the problem was that I was trying to drive the car in the same manner that I did when it had the stock converter and by doing so was keeping it further up in the RPM range because I was so used to a particular response out of a certian TPS%. I am now able to get the car accelerating from a stop light with around 2200 RPM, it's just a fairly slow accel until I lock up at 43mph at which time everything becomes much more responsive.

What speed do most of you guys have your lockup set at for part throttle speeds? Here is what I have right now.

At 5% throttle I set it up to lock at 32mph. Will tune that further though cause with high stall at these speeds revs drop very much so locking is hard.

Good deal. I'll keep on with it then and I am sure I will become better acclimated to the difference.

And then you go read this guys post where he says his SS3600 drives just like stock?

https://ls1tech.com/forums/17492484-post1.html

So what is it really?

I have a SS3600 in my vette. It drives nothing like stock. To get it to even resemble stock, I drive like there is an egg under the pedal. My car has a pretty mild cam and 3.42 gears.

I love the converter, don't get me wrong. But it doesn't drive like stock.

OP

Have you messed with the part throttle shift points? If the car wants to shift from 1 to 2 at a really low mph, it will stall even higher. You might want to play with that.
The Vette will let me lock 3rd if I want as well. So that may also be an option.

I don't let mine lock in high gear until 53mph. It really drags the engine down if I lock it earlier. I also set it to lock at 12% TPS, otherwise it bangs into lock pretty hard. I have to lift off the pedal at times to let it lock.

I need to relock mine at 52mph instead of 43mph. With my cam, it lugs to much in 45mph speed limits.
Did you remove torque management? Increase line pressure at all?

My ramp up is milder than yours from 37.5% on up. That's because if my TPS is much higher than that, I'm in third, not fourth.

I have a PB Level 2 trans, so yes, I removed the torque management.
PB says leave the line pressure stock.

Works excellent btw, nearing 100 drag strip passes.

Need to mention. My car will move away from a stop at idle speed. You don't need to add gas. If you want to move away from a stop faster, the rpm goes up accordingly. If I want to fog the tires, 1/2 throttle does just fine.....

Thanks again for all the support and advice during my break in period guys. Sorry that I have not updated in a few weeks but I bundled the entire extended family in a minivan and drove them from Jackson, MS to San Fran with about a half dozen stops in between for a week then booking it back.

But I went through about a tank and a half now on the new converter with somewhat normal driving and since the fuel trims have relearned along with me learning how to drive a high stalled auto the MPG is nearly back to where I remembered it. There was a 1.2 MPG difference so far pre-converter to what I am getting now.

I think it was a worthwhile upgrade overall, I just need to upgrade my cam to take full advantage of it. I have a little bit of a surge issue on reverse and very very lightly on stopping at lights but I think that is a tuning issue that I need to sort out.

So over all the verdict is to just freaking do it 4K+ and you will love it. The down sides aren't even enough to mention after a week of getting used to it.
