96 4l80e behind 98 5.7 LS1, whats needed to make it work?
I have a chance to buy a 2wd 4l80e transmission out of a 1996 1 ton 2wd truck, I believe it had an LT 7.4 454. He only wants $250 for it, but I've been told that I'm going to have to spend more $ to make it work with my 98 LS1, so I should just buy a 99+ transmission. Since this came from an LT engine and it's mating to an LS, what am I up against?
It's going in my wife's 68 Camaro and hopefully someday I'll Procharge it. I'm looking to use the 4l80e now, so I'll be setup to handle the power later if we choose to go the Procharged route.
My local tuner told me that the LT1 style controller is expensive to tune and that's why I'm better off getting something that originally came behind an LS.
I'm pretty sure this transmission deal won't last long, so any help ASAP would be much appreciated.
THANK YOU!

Good info if u haven't read. The 96 should work same as 97+ models. The pre 97s just aren't As strong in stock form as the newer ones..... From what I've read.

I know nothing about the 4l80e... With that said is the bell housing removable/interchangeable because I know the 4l60e from a lt1 motor will not bolt up to a ls1 motor?

2000-2003 cores are similar to the 1997-1999 cores yet they added a bellhousing bolt position to the 12 o’clock position of the bell for the new LS series engines.
What about using an early model core on an LS engine with the missing bellhousing bolt?
We have many customers using the early cores behind LS engines. You will still have 5 bellhousing bolts instead of 6, and this is the same thing as installing a TH400, TH350, or Powerglide behind these engines. In a perfect world we would use a late model core behind the LS engines and be able to use all the bellhousing bolts. However the core costs are still much higher on the later model cores because GM is still buying these back for their rebuild program.
