Default Tapping trans pan(4L80) for temp gauge?

Just curious if anyone has pics of where they tapped the pan or what exactly they did to get the sensor to stay in there and not leak. It's a 1/8 NPT fitting. ~Cole~

Stock pan or a deep aluminum aftermarket one? Reason I ask is that the stock pan you can weld a nut on there for the sender but the aluminum ones are thick enough to drill and tap directly.

Stock pan. But that gives me a good idea what i'll have to do. So drill a hole, weld a nut that is the right one for this fitting and then just use a thread sealant?

That's what I did. Works just fine. Just make sure it doesn't leak around the nut, put some pipe tape or whatever sealant you choose on the threads and go.

Look for a "steel weld bung" threaded for 1/8 npt

There is different styles but I chose the one that has a little ridge/lip on it

Using a cone/step drill bit drill a hole in the rear of your pan right in the middle so it reads average trans temp.

Drill till the hole is big enough till the bung can fit in and stop after it hits the bung lip..

Then weld a nice bead around the perimeter

That's how mine was done

Jegs.com

It's the auto meter one they sell for they're sending units as an option..

You can use any kind of bung as long as its steel, If using a stock pan..

The ridged ones just make it easier since they sit in the hole before you weld

cool thanks. I was able to find one on eBay and talked with the guy that's building the trans and he said he'll weld it into my pan for me included with the trans build. I'll just bring him the sensor and bung and have him put it in the pan I'm a terrible welder so i don't trust me doing it

I wonder if there is a way to tap into the temp sensor that is located inside the pan? Wonder if it is just a switch or if it could be used to send a signal for a gauge?
Switch as in when a heat problem is detected the sensors signal puts the trans into limp mode. A quick look at the internal harness showed a temp sensor.

Yes the trans has a internal temp sensor but from what i've read there hasn't been a way to get it to read with and aftermarket sensor. i'm just gonna have the bung welded in and be done with it

Almost certainly. Case in point, stock water temp gauge vs aftermarket gauge.

Wouldn't it be easier and cost effective to get an aeroforce interceptor gauge that reads the trans temp over obdII? Thats the route i'm going but also want to monitor other things as well.

You could do that but for me that's the one thing I'm most worried about.

I hear ya. I did my 80e swap and stuck a huge cooler on my rad and it hasn't seen over 190* in stop and go summer heat.
