th350 is actually a good bit stronger esp this one having upgraded th400 (aftermarket) drum and 36 element sprag. I know quite a few guys with full weight cars running low 10s with this same th350 for years with no breakage, I also know several guys with fully built 4l60s that go through them once a year sometimes even more than once running mid to high 10s.

The UMI crossmember was around $250, Madman dipstick $75 and the trans and converter was $1500 shipped. So around $1800 and its guaranteed to 700hp(crank) at 3500 lbs. With the TH350 I was able to reuse my stock length driveshaft, with a TH400 you will need to have yours modified or get a new one.

I am wanting to do this as well. I ve killed two 4l60s now with my stock ls1. I did get two years out of this last one with 3600 stall. Planning cam and nitrous. I want a trans brake and the ability to manual shift.

I have a s60 and would like to find a 9" tail so I can reuse the driveshaft I spent money on.

Yeah, if you don't mind losing overdrive and want it to be much more reliable at the track then its a no brainer. I ordered my trans brand new from PTC, got the upgraded TCI drum and 36 element sprag, deep pan and 9'' housing and it was only $1000, with the auto valve body it will still shift itself if you leave it in 3rd but if you are making a pass or going full throttle then you must manual shift it. I think the trans brake version of this trans is $1200-$1300 brand new from them.

Yessir, on the 4l60e with Vigilante 3200 it would do 1.61-1.64 pretty consistent and 11.48-11.56@117-118. One time with that same setup we got like -1500DA and a really sticky track and it went 11.29 and 11.30 before it ended up breaking the rear end and trans. I have been to the track twice now, +400 and +900DA and the car has done consistent 1.54-1.56 60fts and ran 11.23-11.28@122+mph every pass. So in similar conditions its a solid 3 tenths quicker and 4mph faster.

And wasted fuel. I would never, ever own a 3 speed. I've driven hundreds of times in manual 3rd with no lock up No thanks for that crap. At 160k and hundreds of 11 second passes I'd say the 60e did well, and at that level another could be built easily. But, it sounds like the OP is happy with it so all is well

I don't think so. Buddy just picked up a complete 80e, rebuilt with some fresh stuff inside and zero miles for $800 cash locally. He is a converter away from the swap which he would have had to buy anyway. If you have a 60e converter you could sell it to offset the cost. What's left? A harness repin, or computer segment swap and a crossmember (which you may need for a th350 anyway). It doesn't seem like such a big deal to get into an 80e.

Try 4-4500 rpms on the hwy with a 3.73 and a stock tire

If op is happy with the TH350 so be it, but I'll keep my 4L60e.

I def understand the 3 speed isn't for everyone and if I were daily driving the car I would want the OD trans for sure. So far since the car has had the trans in it I have driven it to work once and driven it to the track and back home twice...suits me just fine as I just don't drive the car enough for it to matter anymore. If anything it helps me not break the law as much lol, 60 is about the fastest I cruise now and im cool with that.

Oh, its not as bad on gas as some might think. I was getting 14mpg before and im getting 11.5-12mpg now and that is including the trips to the track.

Congrats on your fastest pass to date! I like the simplicity of the th350/400 and price. If I had 5gs for a trans id do a 4l80e, but I dont so th400 for me. My setup will have a much tighter convertor because im going with a single turbo. I had a 355 62 nova with 411s and a th350. Was a blast, yes loud but all part of the "hot rod" experience. 3 speed for this guy too!
