4l60e No Manual First Only
Does anyone have any ideas on what may be causing the transmission to start in second gear when the transmission gear selector is in first.
The car does not engine brake when shifting from second to first. There is no difference or shift felt when shifting from first to second.
if the selector is off just fractions of an inch it will go into 2nd and not make the full travel into the 1st gear detent, this would cause the car to start in 2nd gear rather than first and shift to second
i have this problem with my b&m shifter as over time the cables will stretch enough to prevent the shifter from moving the lever on the transmission enough to click into the 1st detent
Thunderstruck, how would I go about checking if the linkage is off. Is there any adjustment for the ball bracket thing that connects on the side of the transmission. I have just the stock shifter not a B&M shifter if that matters. Thanks for the responses.

then disconnect the cable from the linkage and see if you can move the linkage another click (I want to say the linkage will swing towards the rear of the car)
either way, that's the only excuse I can think of it would have first in D but not in manual low
I manually moved the gear from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and there was a difference in the tire movement and sound of the motor. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem may be. Transmission still shifts fine and has first gear in manual 3rd and drive just not in manual 1st.

I listed possible internal problems, but it turned out to be a misadjusted shifter. If you are sure the trans is in [D1], then as mentioned in that thread, I would check out these possibilities in order:
1. Manifold pressure switch ($30 and very easy to replace)
2. Valve body ($100 used or $150 rebuilt; a few hours to replace)
3. Internal problem with the low/reverse clutch
OR - Just don't use [D1]; I never have.
