Default torque converter wont seat all the way please help

Ok I'm new to the site my name is Davey. I have a 99 trans am that I bought recently it had 169,000 on the mileage. I had it for 12 days and blew it up. I have motor back together but I can not get the torque converter to seat all the way. It clunks 2 times but I can not get it to go up on the rotor tabs. Does anyone have any advice other than take it to a shop. I blew through my budget on the motor.

Try rotating it backwards, also move the shift lever on the trans. A combination of all this should get it to go. Remember its not necessarily the clicks but the overall engagement that matters.

Also when seated all the way you should measure about 1 1/8th in. from top of bell housing to converter pads

I tried that it didn't help any. I measured it when I walked to the garage and It measures at 1 1/32 inches from bell housing to mounting pads. The converter has alot of rock to it is this normal. I've changed converters before but it has been awhile.

I would say you are seated all the way, you will not always hear three distinct clicks.

Is the converter supposed to be solid or still able to wiggle back and fourth?

It will still have some play in it. If the trans is in the normal condition it will be loose enough to sag down some.

Once it's up and on the dowls you should have around 1/4 - 3/8 in. between converter pad and flex plate also

Pretty much anything over 1" indicates it is fully seated.
To be sure, just finger tighten the trans-to-engine bolts and measure the distance between the converter pads and flexplate. You can use drill bits to measure the distance. As long as they is a modest gap, the converter is fully seated and you can torque the bolts. The spec is 35 ft/lbs.

The proper gap between the mounting pads and flexplate is 1/16" - 3/16". Any more and you should install spacers/washers to reduce it.
