Yank 3600ss on 100k tranny ???????
Hi guys. I have the opportunity to buy a 4l60e for $200 out of a 2000 t/a with 98k convertible. Guy said he bought car off his neighbor which he said is a female. Said it was dealer serviced its whole life. Car has front end damage. Said he bought it for the motor and part out the rest. No real proof on this but the car is purple(female?) lol. Said no issues with trans. If everything checks out do you think I'm safe changing filter/fluid adding a yank and putting it in my car at those miles? I know I'd need a retune.

at that price you don't have a lot to lose - you would still have yours as a spare or to build up. How many miles on your current trans? any issues with it ?
I have owned almost exclusively high miles GM stuff for the last 30+ years and have had really good luck with unopened original stuff to the point my trust level is much higher than most "builds" not done by someone renowned in their field.
And purple automatic convertible does sound like something that was run gently to me as well , I am sure someone somewhere is hooning the heck out of a purple ragtop but the odds are in your favor its a chic car which likely means little service done and less beatings unless her significant other drives it like he stole it lol

Lol. Mine has 133k and runs great! Just hesitate to put $800 converter in it at those miles. Dont want to cheap out but if i could pick up that tranny at that price and pit the yank in and run it id be happy as sh-t!!! I already have the right tranny cooler on my current setup. What you think? If that tranny has been taking care of at 100k miles you think im safe to do the converter with just fluid/filter change? And whats the worst that can happen to converter if tranny does burn up? Ruin converter? guy said she owned it since 10k miles

To be honest I would rather chance putting a $800 converter in the car I'v maintained and NOT a transmission that I have no clue where it came from. Now that's being said because IDK how well you know this guy. If you're confident he's being upfront with you and you're sure that trans is in better shape then yeah. I'm just very careful about used parts now a days and on most things I don't waste time on used stuff.

'IF' all is as you stated,I would. I blew my forward sprag racing at the strip,4years later 4th gear went. during those 4 years the tranny had to be shifted manually, even a trip from Ohio to Florida. Also during those 4 years I picked up a used 4L60E in Indiana. When 4th gear went,I put the Indiana trans with a Yank SS3600 in,that was in May of 2011. 4 years now with a used 4L60E and SS3600,runs great.

So I ended up buying that tranny. Anything I should replace while its out of the car? I'm not talking internally unless it's not to that difficult? I'm mechanically inclined but have no experience with trannies. Anything to look for? Is a transgo kit any help with ensuring reliability with 100k? Give me some ideas for a better chance of this tranny working . Thx

Yup I'm running the b&m 24,000 supercooled. That big enough? My tranny temps on stock stall never gone above 160. Stick with oem trans fluid? Also I was told if tranny did burn up worst case I'd have to send my converter out to get flushed? Do aftermarket tranny pans do anything? Thx

Another question. Say the tranny starts to slip. Does burning up the clutch plates damage the converter or is it breaking actual tranny parts that require you to send your converter in to get cut open/flushed? Is my trans cooler im running now (b&m 24,000) big enough for yank? Thx

That cooler should be ok but expect to see an increase in temps over the stock converter. Where are you reading your temps from? I've always used any dex 3 since I've had my ss3600 and it's been fine. Also, I have a truck pan which is deeper than the stock pan and the fluid takes longer to heat up, but I've noticed it runs a little warmer now so idk.
I'm pretty sure if the transmission starts to fail, it's reccommended that you send the converter out for a cut and clean. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Thx for reply! I'm using the pressure port for the temp reading. That spot reads 10-15 cooler right? Maybe I'll have a bung welded in my pan while it's off or just keep adding the 10-15 to my reading. What approx temps can I expect just cruising and making track passes with the 3600? 200 and below I'm safe right? Thx in advance for answering all questions !

The pressure port from what I've read/been told reads about 10 degrees higher than what's in the pan. I have an aeroforce scan gauge that reads trans temps via the obd2 port and that also reads higher than a pan mounted sensor because the stock sensor is in the valve body.
I usually see between 160-180 cruising around town if the converter is unlocked and with the converter locked on the highway temps will usually be in the 150s. If you take it to the track and hot lap the car temps can get up there, I went to the track on a 75-80 degree day and saw 185 after a run and went last month when it was 40 out and it barely hit 150. Try to keep the temps under 200 and you'll be good.
