Default 4L80e worth the effort or not

Making the decision what trans to use in my 85 Silverado with the 6.0. I have a TH400 and the 4l80e. What would you guys suggest. Is it worth the extra money for the etrans I'm using the Holley efi

Do you care for overdrive? If you do then the 4L80e is the way to go. Durability and convenience.

Not all worried about overdrive but durability and budget is a concern. I have the trans already but not sure about the cost of the better ecu and torque converter

Even if you don't want or need overdrive the 4l80e is the way to go, It's essentially an turbo 400 but with an extra gear. Look at it this way, With a turbo 400 and 3.42 gears you'll turn around 2,100 rpms at around 65mph. You could run the 4l80e and 3.73 gears and still turn around the same rpms. Rather than looking at it as overdrive look at it for what it really is...another gear. I assume you have the Holley Dominator so that's another reason to go with the 4l80e, You can tune it with the Holley and the 400 turbo you pretty much have what you stuck in there.

From what I have read, There is little difference in the cost to build the 4l80e over the turbo 400. They use many of the same internals.
As far as durability, Stock they can hold 500hp and with a shift kit only they are good for 600+

Thanks for the info that's pretty much what I needed to confirm. I do not have the Holley efi yet but that's why I needed to decide on trans. The dominator is a little more but sounds like it's worth it. Thanks

If I could afford the time and money to get the 80 in there I would. My two cents.

If you get a Dom. then it can run a 4L80E, so your pretty much down to the cost of rebuilding either one-sup. the 400 has a little stronger input shaft, so some guys go to the larger 80E shaft, which ad's cost
If money is tight, then the Holley HP and a 400 are the cheapest route, but your limited with 4 in/out puts
Nothing like an OD when your out on the highway though, lol

The Holley site and Amazon are showing a "sale" price of $1792 right now. All the cable harnesses, Holley-specific (!) O2 sensors and such will likely add another $1000 to that. (All are also on sale on Amazon).

I have seen "never used" systems for sale at lower prices on Craigslist and by individuals on ebay. Typically the story is they ran out of money to build their super drag car and are selling everything.

+1 if you can squeeze a little bit more money out, the 4l80 will be your best option in the long run IMO. you can make it hold tons of power and can drive across the country with it cruising. Th extra (gear) will help you out easing around.

For what its worth; my car with 3.73's and a 26" tire turns 2700 rpm @ 70 mph in od with the 80e trans. If you are gonna do anything besides track or just crusing local drive ins the 80e is definitely worth it.

This is where I got mine, best pricing I could find by far. Even when you include the "Team Tick" membership cost the pricing is better.
