Default 4L60e acts like its in first when it shifts in third.

I'm having this strange issue with my 4L60e.

When you pull it down into drive and start driving normally, it will shift fine until 30-35 mph or so where it goes to shift into third. Once it hits third, it almost acts like its in Neutral, and feels like it is free-revving, even though you will continue moving. RPM is almost consistent with 1st gear.

If you rev it out a little bit and get going 40-45 mph and let off of the gas, when the RPM falls below 2000 you can feel it shift again, and then if you ease into the gas it feels as though it is in third gear. It won't slip and it holds power fine after this. If you leave the selector in 2nd so that it doesn't try to shift into third, it drives fine, but you only get the first two gears.

It just seems odd that it acts as though it is free-revving once it shifts into third, but all you have to do is speed up, let off of the gas, and it will shift and keep going. It only does it when you accelerate through 2nd gear until you hit the shift point. No CEL. It does occasionally come on for multi-cylinder missfire or EVAP flow.

I've been told a few different things.

1. People that seem to have NO idea just tell me that its going bad and needs to be rebuilt.
2. Some people mention that it might be limp mode. I've experienced this before but it doesn't seem to be what happening.
3. I was told to replace both shiftA and shiftB solenoids.

Does anyone have any theories as to why is acts this way when shifting into third, but is easily remedied by speeding up and letting off of the gas, allowing it to shift again?

Right before my 3-4 clutch went out the 2-3 shift would rev up the rpms but eventually shift into 3rd and subsequently 4th. Within a week the 2-3 shift would no longer occur. When I rebuilt it the 3-4 clutch was burnt, probably from the bad 3-4 piston I found leaking fluid.

No idea if that's your problem, but how long has your transmission been doing this?

No idea. Bought it yesterday. Guy said it wouldn't go over 40 mph. After driving for a minute I realized I can get it to go into 3rd by revving it out and letting off of the gas.

I had this exact problem several years ago with my 4L60E. Turned out the 2-3 clutch was fried. I don't even mess with a 60E anymore; 4L80E FTW!

I bought it as "needs work" with the intent on cleaning it and fixing it to resell. Cosmetically it is in excellent shape. Engine needs a quick tuneup but the transmission is going to slow the sale.

I'm going to replace the ShiftA and ShiftB Solenoids, and look for a backup trans for the time being. Sadly, I just parted one out that had a freshly rebuilt transmission in it. Now I feel dumb LOL.

I am having the same issue as you right now. Do you have manual 3rd when the transmission's electronics are unplugged? (The big gray plug on the passenger side of the transmission)

If you unplug the trans, the only gears you will have will be 2nd and reverse.

CORRECTION: On a 4L60E you will only have 3rd and Reverse. (On a 4L80E, it is 2nd and Reverse.)

It now does it at 20 mph going into 2 gear as well, and once you finally get it to shift into 2nd, it won't go into 3rd. Maybe it's Solenoids after all.

I fully agree with that. The 3/4 clutch is toast. We do recommend replacing all solenoids during a rebuild, but this is not a bad-solenoid symptom.
