Need help asap! 4l60e issue! Hey guys, new to the group, im not too formal on parts and names of things but im not stupid first off, secondly l, i got a 99 camaro ss from tradinf an atv for it, and it had a th350 in it. I threw 2nd gear out and didnt care for the th350 anyways. I had to get a loan to get a new transmission, obviously the OE. Which ahould be the 4l60e right? Ok so i take the th350 out, and i have just the green harness connector, and the speedo sensor 2 pin pigtail for the tailshaft.. and there was a vaccuum modulator and a detent cable applied for the th350.

I ordered the new transmission, and the one they sent me for the car and what it supposedly calls for is the 4l60e, but when i got it, it has a black box on the side, an MLPS or neutral safety switch. My car does NOT have those harness plugs to fit that black box! What do i do!? Is there a way to still use the transmission? Like i said i had to get a loan to get the transmission so i can drive to and from work, i dont hae all thw extra money in the world to just waste. I would really appreciate any and everybodys help. Im not looking for arguments or bullcriticism in this thread.....

The black box has the switch for the reverse lights and the Park/Neutral safety switch. If you don't need them, you don't need the black box. Other than Park/Neutral it DOES NOT tell the PCM what gear you are in; that is handled internally and through the transmission harness plug on the 4L60E/4L80E.
One thing to check is whether your shifter cable connects properly to the shifter shaft which goes through the black box. Some (trucks?) have a longer shaft which might not work with your car. While not trivial, a trans shop could easily swap in the shorter shaft.

Thank you, do you of anyone that sells that specific harness or a good site to get that harness from? Or is it possible that the neutral safety switch could be inside the car by the shifter or something?

If this helps verify the issue, i put the car i reverse without the tranny in and the reverse lights came on, so obvisouly its hooked up elsewhere. And will the shifter still get messed if i put a really good spacer and washer and double nut the outside of the threaded part, and make sure it doesnt hit anything and stays mounted?

Many aftermarket shifters, like those from B&M, include switches to indicate Reverse and Park/Neutral. Sounds like at least the Reverse switch is connected to your Reverse lights.
Connecting the Park/Neutral switch to the PCM does not implement the Park/Neutral safety feature; at least it doesn't on my car. Therefore either it is implemented in a different way or your car doesn't have a Park?Neutral safety switch.
Assuming you have an aftermarket shifter, you will have to determine if the existing cable will work for you. With an aftermarket shifter you will also want to change its operation from 3 speed to 4 speed.

As long as the shifter cable is straight & Adjusted correctly.....I don't see why not.

Well if i do anything to the transmission i void warranty, 2 i have a stock shifter nothing aftermarket, the dumb@$$ that had the car befote just didnt take care of the car. And everything is screwed up every which way. Im just trying to get it driving and in order correctly. Ive even looked at some wite harnesses and they show the same wires and nothing extra like that for the neutral safety switch. So my guess is that it was a stock feature and that it doesnt have this feature on it in a harness for the car, and that maybe the transmission had this in it for what their lists told them ftom prior purchases .. idk . Im just tired. And i want this thing done. I dont have all the extra money to have someone do it and thats where it screws me. But i love working on it... just dont want to screw anything up or get ahead of myself.

If your car starts and you have reverse lights, then simply IGNORE the black box and don't even try to connect anything to it. REALLY - ignore it. I don't even have one.
As long as you still have the 13-wire harness that connects to the trans, and can get the shifter connected, you are good to go. Obviously you also need a LS-style converter.
Before installing the trans make sure the holes in the flexplate align with the converter.
When installing the converter MAKE SURE and measure with a ruler that the converter pads are at least 1" from a straight edge held over the bellhousing. Anything less and the converter is not fully seated and you will ruin the trans when you bolt it up.
I can't help you with the shifter cable since I don't have a Gen-4, but Clinebarger has offered to give you more instructions. You can remove the black box if you need to - that won't affect your warranty since you can easily put it back on.

Lol yea u know obviouwly, thats why i havent even put the thing in because i wantedto make sure it was right. I dont have time or money to waste. I want this car back in shape. Slap it in is just a term of installing it in my free time.
