Default To go bigger converter or keep ss4000

Hi fellas, so I've had a lot of success with the ss4000 converter in my car cutting a best 60ft of 1.32 and ususally in the 1.35 range. I added the 2.84 planetary this year and the 60ft's were still right at the same 1.35 so far (with more power this year). Trans is acting up and just got shipped to rpm transmissions for a rebuild. Thinking about getting a yank pt4400 to try and see if I can go a little faster. The ss4k actually seems a bit on the tight side anymore as the car has gotten faster. I've done some searching on here and seems like a toss up with going bigger. I'm open to any opinions and real world experience.

Wouldn't you want it to be on the tighter side with more power?
Was it running the same et or blowing through the converter on the top end?
Are you sending the converter back to be gone through while the trans is being rebuilt?
I'm by no means a trans guy, just asking some questions.

I would data log what the converter flashes to on the launch and how much the RPM drops on the shift. That will give you insight.

Great advice. I keep forgetting you can do that.

On another note, I've used his custom cams in 2 different engines with awesome results.
1 HR and one in the 406 in my sig. SR

Yep it's "flashing" up to around 5200. Rpm drop is around 1300rpm between shifts

Trans had some consistency issues with shift points that's why it's at rpm right now, but looking at 7200-7400 shift point when everything is right

No dyno numbers but peak power should be right at 7000

Sounds like there is some more in it if loosened up.

I thought the est 75hp more would "loosen" it up but it really didn't. I am only on 21deg timing now so I think the 60's should go down in the near future anyways.

I'm undecided on what to do at this point. I might just buy a pt4400 and if I don't like it I can switch back in the ss4000. It is a crazy good converter for these ls/4l60e combos.

I think your right. If it could "flash" up another 400 rpm and drop say around 900rpm in between shifts it should keep me in the power better. Just hope its a noticeable difference on the timeslip. Worried since I was reading some of Chris1313 old post about him changing from the ss4k to bigger and his didn't go any faster..

I switched from a ss3600 to a pt4000. The SS was a great converter but I absolutely love the pt.

I was going to go with the pt4400 but Dave at yank told me I don't spin my motor high enough which is 6800. He said if I spun to 7200-7400 the pt4400 would be perfect.

I'm glad he talked me out of the 4400 because for my setup up spinning to 6800 the pt 4000 is perfect, shift extensions are at about 6100 rpms which is perfect for my setup.

Dave at yank also said the SS 4000 will 60' better but the pt 4000 will trap higher.

With that said me and my buddy last season had about the same setup.
Exhaust + pt 4000 z28 vs my exhaust ss3600 T/A
Same day results....
Z28 pt4000 - 12.00 @ 111 mph 60' 1.63
T/A ss3600 - 12.24 @ 111 mph 60' 1.71

Imo I would give the PT series a try.

Asking the weight will only make you cry when you find out.

I should clarify the times posted were bolt on both shifting at around 6100 rpms.

My switch to the pt4000 includes a heads cam build also just to clarify the 6800 shifting with 6100 extensions on that converter

hahah old combo has been quicker at this point. ls1 with flat tops, home ported ls1 heads, baby 223/227 cam, fast 102 and a bunch of little details. It weigh's right at 3000 racing and little more in street trim. New combo has tea 243's and a bigger cam
