Default Colonel, what is a reasonable tranny temp

I have Rosslers built th 350 lockup not a daily driver of course, but do drive to cruise-in's shows, etc...after about 25 minutes on the highway at 55-60 mph, engine is roughly 3100rpm's the gauge crepped right above 210...is that acceptable? I of course have a tranny cooler running a 4400 stall.

The tranny was just installed and yes, fluid level is fine. I also am running a deep pan as well.

I am not the Colonel but I will try to answer your question.

210* seems high to me especially if the converter was locked. If the (4400) converter was unlocked and you were cruising at 3300 RPM there would be a lot of slippage and would cause the fluid temp to be high. Either way 210* is high for just cruising around.

I think that 170 to 190 is as high as you would want to see the fluid temp if you were just cruising around.

I agree, for easy driving with the converter locked, 210 is high. I'd hate to see what it would be doing if you were driving it hard.

Coolant temps staying fine? Tranny cooler installed after the radiator or before (path of fluid is what I'm talking about.) And you're sure the converter was locked, right?

I'm 175-180F with my non-lockup most of the time.

28,000 GVW cooler with the big nice fittings.

Thanks everyone...I talked to Mike Brown, and we are going to swap out the stock lines for some larger hose and fittings like John stated he had.

Are you running a tranny blanket on it full time? The hoses and fittings will help eliminate a blockage issue but they might not give a lot more cooling potential.

Worst case, you can add another B&M cooler in the daisy chain and it will add additional cooling power. I ended up running a 24K and a 19K B&M daisy chained in order to help maintain the temps after adding the tranny blanket full time for the daily driver.

The nice thing about this was that I could hot lap 3-4 runs and keep the temps in the 180F range.

May want to run a before and after flow test. run a hose off of the retun from the cooler to a quart jug and time how long it takes to fill. This was a tip a tranny rebuilder sent with a transmission i bought for my truck once. I cant remember what the time to fill should be. im assuming you have already bypassed the cooler in the radiator. if not that would be your first line of defense. the radiator cooler is a bottleneck that reduces flow.

FWIW...last weekend I was tooling around, and noticed on this very hot day, my tranny temps were getting out of hand. I have a built tranny, 3200 Vig, 160 t-stat, and a tranny cooler, and I had never seen this happen before with this set-up.
I had just picked my car up from the speed shop I do business with...where I had some engine work done. The tranny just kept getting hotter the longer I drove it...200...210...220...230...237...and I was not driving it hard at all.

I was really worried about it going beyond 220, and so when I got home I did some research on the forums to see what I could find on the subject. At first, I thought maybe my t-cooler was hooked up wrong, or had some blockage.
This was a "fresh" tranny with low miles, and it seemed I was burning the thing up just driving around like grandma. Well, I knew better than to get on it at all like this, as I would probably trash my clutches in that kind of heat...but no matter how I babied it, it just kept getting hotter. Finally, I got out of the heavy stop and go traffic I was in, and on to the highway. Immediately everything began cooling down! Well, while I was keeping an eye on the tranny temps earlier, I also noticed my engine temps going up along with the tranny.

Anyway, like I said, I got home, did some research, and can't remember whether it was on here, or on corvetteforum, that I read a thread about coolers tapped into a certain radiator line(can't remember which one), would cause the tranny temps to follow the engine coolant temps! I was like...hmmm...surely this GREAT speed shop I've done ALL this business with, would not overlook completely filling my radiator after some in depth engine work...would they???

You can see where I'm going with this...right? So, I go out to the garage...open my hood...check my water level...and you guessed it...it was WAY LOW!!!
So, I fill it to the PROPER level...I get in and go for a test drive, and PRESTO!...nice low engine and tranny temps ever since, regardless of traffic conditions or air temperature!!! Evidently, the engine temps were heating up the tranny through the cooler lines??? I don't know...I just hope nothing got too cooked in my newly built tranny!

I've never seen my speed shop(I'm doing them a favor by not mentioning their name) do this before, so I just blew it off.
During the next couple of weeks I have the car back in there to freshen up my heads, get it back...water level's too low AGAIN!!! So the customer fills their water level up yet again! Must be time to look for a new shop.

7.How many miles on the car/radiator?Is it more than 50,000 (hope not)

All the above are more relavent to this topic than most think,For all who read this and post judgment about a reputable shop(which is plainly stated by the way) mis-filling coolant tank,take the above into consideration along with the mods.

I know for a fact the shop above does check out sheets 2 pages long on all cars before they are delivered,along with complete test drives before it can be signed off on.Been there and seen it done !

Anxiously awaiting answers to the above!

Wow, my post got taken over that is cool...I fixed my problem however...added an additional cooler and replaced all of the stock metal lines with 3/8 hose...crusing around tranny temp stayed right at 150...

if you want please lock this thread so who ever is having issues with this so called no name shop can be addressed outside my thread thanks!!!

TECHHERE...not flaming anybody here, as you can see I am refraining from naming the shop...only upset that after I left the car in their care, I shouldn't have to check the coolant level, to keep it from dragging my tranny temps into danger city...especially when the work they performed, required them to check the coolant level...and don't forget...this happened twice(coolant level).
Also, don't know why you think it's your personal business, especially when I haven't named the shop? What do you do, track people to determine their screennames, and what shop they might be using??? Also used more shops than what's in my sig...so don't bother going there!

That being said...here are the answers to your questions. Like I said...haven't flamed anyone by name here. As a matter of fact, I like all the guys in this shop, and there was a time I could have taken them to court over a very recent expensive issue(and still can, if I want to), which I won't name, but didn't because of my relationship with them. There have been other issues, but I haven't mentioned them. I'm human, let me be upset at my misfortunes, like everyone else...and I will be talking about them, when they happen to me.

1. Don't remember the exact air temp, but it was in the low to mid 90's. I have driven numerous times in this temperature and humidity without any issues before this, and with every mod listed!
2. The engine temps were consistantly within a few degrees of the tranny temps, at all times and during all escalating tranny temps! Don't remember the variance.
3. I already stated that my speeds were in heavy stop and go traffic...go figure!! The engine temps were rising rapidly at that time and began to cool off after I hit the highway! Why don't you go back and read my thred again before you start attacking me???
4. Yes, the a/c was on...brilliant deduction. Getting a little emotional over this aren't you???
5. It was not full to the rim or the oem mark, in a significant way. As a matter of fact...it took 2 quarts of water to get it to the "properly filled when cold" mark!!! Let me guess you want to keep defending this in vain, right?
6. Can't remember the exact temp here, but was just extremely happy the temps came down to a safer level. How is it you know who this shop is, since I didn't mention any names?
7. The car/radiator has about 85,000 problem free miles in regard to it's ability to run cool. It has never had a cooling issue, and doesn't have one now, thanks to me filling the radiator to the proper fill mark! The engine is a 2002, and has only 8,000 miles, and the tranny is fresh with only about 2,000. Anything else your highness?

The shop who did this, is a reputable shop, and I have bent over backwards for them on stuff like this, and many times have spent hundreds of dollars out of my own pocket, to just keep things on good terms with them...and let them rebound from some issues I'm not going to mention on this thread. They also have done things for me as well. Not trying to bash them.

That being said, I don't like people who won't take responsibility for their mistakes...and I don't appreciate you thinking I can't sound upset about this, on here or anywhere else. If I wanted to trash someone, I can do it with a vengeance, and on more forums than here. I'm not about ruining people's reputation, thus...no name for the shop...get it? Nothing wrong with relaying info about mechanical problems and where they originated.

If you don't work for this shop, I don't see how it's any of your business...and I don't appreciate you acting like I can't share my misfortunes with my car on here!
If you do work for this shop, relax, I haven't mentioned any names, and don't intend to. After all you and I are the only ones who know who we are, right? Chill out! In fact I still recommend people to this shop, only wish they would be more careful about certain details, before they return the car to the customer...and I happen to know the owner would agree with that!

On the other hand...if I find out you're affiliated with this shop, and are attacking your customer, instead of just saying, "oops, sorry for the oversight."...maybe I am being stupid for being so understanding.
I'll be curious to find out who you are.
