SS3600 is the most popular street/strip converter on this site for a reason.

I'm pretty conservative on stall speeds (annoyingly so to some), but I also think a Yank SS3600 is perfect for street driving with a 3.42 or higher rear end ratio. With a 3.73 rear you will love the SS3600. While I had a Yank SS3600 I switched to a Circle D 3600 just for variety and it is equally street friendly and tight. I can accelerate briskly without revs going past much past 2500, just as sxc_Z28 says.

qweedqwag complaint that it "sucks" makes me wonder if there is something wrong with his setup or converter. I will say that a TCI 3200/3600 converter sucks, in more ways that one.

kingtal0n's "3.73 puts a hard limit on mph without going to overdrive" doesn't seem relevant here because you can hit 120 mph in 3rd gear with a 3.73 rear and 6200 rev limit, and you aren't going to come close to that with a stock cam.

And of course you do plan to changing cams soon too. Right?

I have a ProYank 3400e - a blower converter in my ProCharged D1SC 98 Z28 with 565 RWHP. I don't drag race or street race, strictly highway and blvd cruising.

Had 3.73 gears but didn't like city or highway driving - rpms too high and didn't like rpm's to get to 45 mph. Dropped to 3.42 ratio- a mistake - didn't help much. Finally went back to 3.23.

IMO - for my needs the best ratio is 3.23 for both city and highway cruising with my Yank. With 565 to the rear wheel even with 3.23 gears you can spin the wheels pretty easy up to 45 mph or and more so with 3.73 if that's what get's you excited.

IMO four things to consider for the OP's needs when choosing a stall.

1) rear end ratio
2) rwhp
3) tuning is critical for shift points to get best drive-ability
4) how noisy is your exhaust and rasp. For me, a noisy raspy exhaust gets old real fast with a loose stall. On the other hand, some enjoy the heck out of the noise when getting up to speed - especially under-passes when you blip the throttle and scare the crap out of the driver next to you. So it's subjective.

Try to find some rides with different combos before you spend the big bucks.

BTW, before the Yank I had a Precision (Vigilante 3600 stall). It was loose as a goose compared to the Yank I have now even after Precision re-stalled it supposedly down to 3000.

I recently had to replace the converter hub because of a transmission pump bearing failure. Even though it is over 10 years old Dave at Yank said it was still nearly in perfect condition. All it needed was cleaning along with a new hub. I like Yank, but there are other brands that are just as good.

An ss3600 IMO is perfect for a DD / street car. I had one in my car for 6 years and really enjoyed it with 3.73s. I'd cut mid 1.6's with my far from optimized set up and really hits hard out of the hole due to the 2.5 STR. This also makes it fee tighter around town.

I'm going to a new converter with my new set up so I'm curious how different it'll be.

New setup is a heads cam lq4 and I'm going to run a ptc converter that should be in the 4k range.
